Time for a new plant to build an opinion? [amd xp 2000] [gaming rig]

Dont believe winXP 64 is very friendly with anything 3D…stick with regular 32-bit until stable drivers, games, etc are out.

Oh i was just listing the 64-bit because i'm going to dual boot, between xp pro and the 64-bit version. I have a copy of xp pro and a key i can use to install it with yet…

That's what I do. I have XP-64 as my main OS. But all of the games are installed on a Windows 2000 partition.

Re:I also recommend the Antec SLK3000 for a case. It's pretty darn cheap, and is a great case. Fits 2X120mm and has lots of room. Well designed. Only flaw is no Front audio/firewire and the front cover over the drives is kind of cheap… But other then that, it's great. I just built two systems using it.

I did read the comments and 2 of the 3 with failures (out of 30 reviews, 27 not reporting failures) blamed the heat the drive put out. well, i'm not buiying some tiny microatx case with one 80 mm fan :P

I'm going to assume that i may need to take extra precaution to assure the drive is properly cooled by the air intake fan, to avoid 'premature' failure. is it that hard to run cool air past a HD so it doesn't fry?

a lot of positive feedback, only a few unlucky souls with problems, I've had exactly 1 maxtor hd and 1 wd drive fail on me in the past 15 years… and the maxtor was the only one that died under warrenty (2 years into using it, the wd died 5 years after i purchased it, but by then it was just a 'beater' torrent drive to spare my main drive from all the thrashing…) i use old drives for torrents and new drives for my os, when an old drive fails hopefully there wasn't much data unrecoverable. since i've been through somel hd failures i know when a hd is going, and i routinely check them for signs of failure, so usually i get about 97% of the data recovered intact…

otoh there are very few people who've had problems with 'your' hitachi deskstar.. but my drive performs better but more people have had problems with it failing.

*sniff* *sniff* Do I smell Raid 1?

If you can get your hands on it, I would change the Fireblade GPU for a GTO2. It's a little more money, but the GTO2 has been falling in price. It can be unlocked to 16 pipes (the Fireblade cannot be unlocked), and can supposedly overclock to X850XT PE speeds.

Edit: take out the stuff on mobos

i'll have to consider it, thanks for the advice, figuring out which gpu to buy can be a tough thing with so many models on the market, and so little performance difference between most of them.

I would recommed 2×1GB of ram, rather than 2×512MB. It makes it much simpler to overclock and BF2 really notices the improvement in performance. For overclocking Anandtech seems to recommend Crusible Balixic… but I personally like OCZ.

In any case… I would also recommend a Seasonic over an Antec. Seasonics higher efficency means lower heat load (and lower power costs). This means you could overclock easier if desired (or just slower fans for less noise).

okay you convinced me on the ram, for $80 more i can get 2GB of OCZ (after mail in rebate) instead of the 1 GB i picked initially… but the seasonic is nearly double the price, and a lot of people gave negative feedback on the 600 watt unit :<

the tp2.0 antec has very little negative feedback, mostly from unlucky souls who managed to get one that slipped past QA. plus it's only $90 >_< man i rememeber when $90 was a lot for a psu. i paid like $65 or $75 for my TP 420 which has given me 4 awesome years of quiet operation…

Did you checkout the reviews for the maxtor drives? ;)

I would also recommend that you go with a more reliable hard drive manufacturer. Maxtor sucks!

Does anyone else find it ironic that a guy bitching about maxtor is running a hitachi deathstar ;) okay okay, i know the Deathstars were really only the ones covered in the class action suit.. maxtor drives aren't the worst drive on the planet, unless you have credible evidence that the 200 GB SATA model is a defecive POS i think i'll just rely on a regular monthly ghosting of my system and counting on the warrenty if the drive craps out on me.

Yea, you do that. ;)

I would find another case by a better company that does not have a PSU in it.

COOLER MASTER Centurion 5 CAC-T05-WW Black/Silver Aluminum Bezel, SECC Chassis ATX Mid Tower Computer Case – Retail

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16811119077

would you guys think of that as a step up? apparently the only issue you guys have with it is i didn't put the antec psu close enough to the case in the list, and the case itself…

and $1,000 for a computer that will run all the games out there for 4- 6 years is what i consider an investment in my hardware… about 4 years ago i paid around 1 grand for the system i'm thinking of replacing now, i didn't 'upgrade' the processor like i thought i might i haven't needed to upgrade the ram, and the graphic card didn't get replaced either, but then i paid $400 for it when $400 was a high price for a gpu.

sure i could find the rock bottom everything and have a $500 system that only barely beats out my current system, but i want a system that Feels great to use every day for years ^^; my old system is going to be hooked up to a tv set for a while yet too, it is actually not that bad of a system, just a little dated for gaming.

yep i agree! for something that nice.. u need to house it nicely ;) good cases go a long ways.. i got my lian li bout 3 yrs ago and its been one of the best investments

Re:Originally posted by: guy
So your gonna spend 1000 bucks on a computer, and your gonna fry everything by skimping out on the PSU.

Rosewill is newegg's house brand, I can not recommend them…. ever.

Get an Antec Case and PSU combo or a Cooler Master case and a Fortron/Xclio PSU.

No dude… You're doing the same thing I did… He's got an Antec 550W in the list. I just missed it.

Re:Doh! Man.. I swear I looked that list over two or three times and didn't see that. :)

I just kept seeing that damn Rosewill! :o

Re:Antec TRUEPOWERII TPII-550 ATX12V 550W Power Supply – Retail $84.99

i think that is his psu

I see the PSU that comes with the case, but you can't be serious about using it.

Think about it… $44.99 case. How much did the case cost??? How much was the PSU?

I'm afraid that PSU is total crap. You should consider anything else. ;)
