Best Answer: In Vista this is automatic. The device discovery does not need to be manually set. What does need to be done is to ensure you did not manually set any 2 devices to the same IP on the local net.

Re:If you go into control panel, look under network adaptors.
Can you see your onboard NIC there – all healthy and no X or !.
If yes, then shove in the cd for your modem, and install – read the documentation first that came with it – some say the modem should be connected before the installation starts, some say it shouldn't be connected.

Re:if I remember right, you have to go under device manager and add ethernet connection under network adapters or other devices. I am not sure thow to do it or what to do after it.

Re:OK, so you have a modem sent by the ISP. It came with a cd and ainstructions on how to install it.
