Two routers, two cable modems and two houses. How can I hook both together to see. [e mail address] [cable modems]

Q: Hi, I

I moving to an apartment next door and my friend and I will want to play LAN games against each other. Here are the following things we want to play against each do.

Play other
Share files

He already has its own connection as I am. Were not going to share is one of our casue comes to their e-mail address with the provider if we do lose. All we want to do is play games and host files.

WE would easily be able to drill a hole in the wall and run a network cable no problem. The landlord is free to linient stuff.

I who have never to do anything like that, so Im kinda wondering if it would work with different domains.

Re:what if he doesn't have a rouer on his end just a PC> would a regular cat 5 cable from my router to his PC do the job?

Re:yep. just uplink the two routers but use your own gateways to get out, making sure no node on either network has the same IP. pretty simple. will cost you one cable, a long one probably and possibly a X-over depending on your switches.

Re:I am pretty sure wireless is not an options since there is a big firewall between the two apts. they are tight next to each other basically touching itself.

I don't wanna share the internet connection since we would be loosing our e-mail that we got from our providers.

I am thinking the Router to Nic and then not share my connection will still work the best.

Re:Not sure how it works in an apartment building, or if you are in a multi-family house, but there are dangerous grounding issues that can arise when running between two buildings or houses with Cat5. Something you should consider, seeing as you run the risk of blowing up two computers.

Not that I know anything about electricity, but it is what pushed me to use wireless.

Re:Just uplink one of the switches on one of the routers to the other, disable DHCP and assign unique static IP's on the same subnet and make sure that your routers do not have the same IP address, then use your router as your gateway IP address and he would do the same. That way you are still using your respective internet connections but can communicate between yourselves. No need for a second Nic. You might need run your cable as a X-over if neither switch has an uplink or auto-detecting ports.

Re:if thats the way it is, i say one of you get rid of your cable connection, and have the two of yaz share the one connection…hell, its what i'd do if my next door neighbor was like yours.

BUt if you dont want to, you can either run a network cable form one of your routers to a second NIC in the other guy's computer, or buy just a plain old hub, and hook up a 2nd nic in each computer to the hub, thus avoiding any kind of internet sharing. By using the router method, the first method, one guy will get access to the other guys cable internet.

are you saying both yours and your friend's cable modem are hooked up to their own separate cable modem router? like those ones from linksys or other network manufacturers?

Re:Just have an extra network card in one of the pcs and run a cable from there to the router on the other network. I'm not sure if you can run a cable from router to router. Just my .02, I'm not no network expert by any means.
