Most explorer crashes are usually related to a corrupt or badly behaving add-in. Uninstalling the program will help you isolate the offender; from there you can figure out how to disable its context menu after its installed.

I this case, since WS_FTP is the only program trhat has changed in recent memory, I am reasonably sure I have isolated the culprit. Can I just remove it from the contect menu via Regedit, or is it likely to be tied in to other dll's?

Edit: Perplexingly, since being operated via the keyboard commands (Alt-x) the right-click context menu is now functioning normally… for now.

Try uninstalling those programs one by one and see if the problem persists.

guy; before I run off and start uninstalling my programs, I'd like to hear your rationale for why you think the context menu is casuing the crashes. Your idea seems logical, but for instance; if in fact it is WS_FTP causing the problem, I still need to use the program. I don't remember an option during installation on adding an item to the menu.

I can rename the folders when not using the right-click menu (Alt-F) so your theory seems sound, and I thank you for that. I guess I would just like a less terminal work-around.

Do you have any compression utilities installed (WinZip, WinRAR, etc.)? Any other program that might add a context menu to explorer?

yes, several : WinRar, PaintShop Pro, WS_FTP Pro. The only one that has changed in the last few months would be WS_FTP whioch I upgraded recently…

How do I modify that context menu?

Re:I ran chkdsk – to no avail.

If I even right-click a folder and select Properties, explorer crashes.

Run Scandisk for your hard disk(s): Start -> Run -> cmd -> chkdsk <drive letter>: /f

For example chkdsk c: /f

It will probably tell you that it has to run on a reboot, so go ahead and reboot and let it do its thing.

If that doesn't solve it, run a search for spyware and viruses, and report back :)

Hmm, I'll try the checkdisk, I already run Spybot and Spysweeper. Thanks.
