Ultra linux noob question, answer quickly! [xchat] [mandrake]

Q: I really should have read some documents before diving in, but here I am with a fresh install and im completely lost. im trying to install but cannot figure out . I know it should probably be included, but the second CD when I got burned think it was bad, so I had to skip during installation. How to install from the file .org? I download it i cannot find. I need to install it by typing in the console stuff? Answer quickly before I go nuts.

Re:"ld" is part of the bin-utils package, though I'm not certain calls it that exactly. But you're making this so much harder than it should be. Take people's advice and learn to use rpm or apt-rpm.

ok i extracted the tar or whatever but when i do ./configure it says "no acceptable ld found in $path". any idea whats wrong?

yeah, 's default install doesn't install compilers. You need all the compiling tools for that I think.

Re:extracted the tar

maybe this is the problem

Re:rpmfind.net should help you find an rpm for . Use that.

man rpm for more information.

Re:Why are you wasting your time ? Log in as root and 'apt-get dist-update' is all you need to type.

Here's a link to the apt rpm for .

Re:i cant find the file…

Re:find the file first, then type:

tar xzvf -1.8.10.tar.gz
cd -1.8.10
./configure –prefix=/usr
make
su
enter root password
make install
exit
cd ..
rm -rf -1.8.10
cd ~
