Q: Im trying to recover data from a hard drive dying. Ive put the hard drive in another computer. The hard drive no longer boots, but can be read for a few seconds each boat. It is a WinMe PC with OE. I do not know the version. Is there a way to copy the data files as a means of backup and restore them later? If so, what files I need and where are they?
Thanks.
Re:Yup it's in the freezer now.
Thanks!
Re:I think it may be same as Win98 which is located here:
C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Identities\{4F4D8AC0-DF83-11D6-A41E……}\Microsoft\Outlook Express
You need to have "show all files" enabled to see hidden folders.
You will see all the OE folders with .dbx etensions, copy and save the .dbx files to import later into OE.
To keep a dying hard drive alive for a short while longer (while you copy files off it) I have heard people put the hard drive in a plastic bag and stick it in the freezer to get it very cold. Seriously.
Re:Ummmm…sorry, I assumed you were using W2K or XP. I don't have a clue where WinME would store the folder.
Re:Is there a Documents and settings folder in WinMe?
Re:Well, I've changed the default location of my OE files, but I think they are around:
C:\Documents and Settings\XXXXX\Local Settings\Application Data\….
or
C:\Documents and Settings\XXXXX\Application Data\….
Where XXXXX is your Login/Username.
There should be a folder at one of the locations that should have the OE email files.
Re:I can't get that PC to boot so I can't launch OE and therefore can't export anything.
