Q: Hi just built my first
I system, and the ChromeOrb used
there I was kind of a rubbery patch where it connects to
the Athlon. I just sit and now I get about 68c.
I feel this way too high, should I remove rubberythingy
and put some Arctic Silver instead?

What temps are reasonable? 45? 55?

Re:Why not use the Taisol. Its only $11.30 for the cheaper one plus $7.00 shipping. Does a good job. Remove the heat transfer pad and use artic silver. Temps should stay below 46 or 48C.

Re:guy,
What fake Orb are you talking about? Must've missed that one. I sent it back and after a couple emails about my refund (they had it for 2 weeks) they finally sent me a refund plus $5.00 for my troubles. Maybe they knew something I didn't.

Re:Hey, thanks guy for the tip, I will try
that out later today. When I installed it, the
compound looked a bit too thick, possibly the
plastic got separated when I pulled it off.

Re:I tried a Chrome Orb on mine and it wouldn't even boot. There wasn't anything on the base of the heatsink, no plastic, goop, zilch. Tried several times making sure everything was ok. Put the coolermaster back and it would boot right up. I've since put the FOP32-1 on it and works great.

Re:WARNING *** WARNING
You many have installed your Orb incorrectly.
Sounds EXACTLY as the problem I had….
Here is what happend to me: when I pulled that plastic film off the ChromeOrb, it SEPARATED!!! So a portion of it remained on the Orb (v. thing blue looking piece of plastic).
If you are like me and have no idea what that thing is supposed to look like, you put your heatsink onto your CPU and are getting really high themps.
Assuming this is what happened — I'd recommend you turn off your PC, get the ChromeOrb out (it's quite a trick to get that thing off the socket) and very, very closely inpect the thermal compuund. If you see anythink blue or plasticky lookin, pull it off. That thin piece of plastic acts as a very good thermal insulator…
Needless to say — after I fixed the problem (without even applying any suepr duper thermal compund to replace whatever the Orb ships with) my temps went down by 30C and I now have no problem reaching 900 Mhz at default core voltage and 1GHz at 1.75 with my Duron 600… And I'm sure my CPU is much happier, too
Good luck!
