Q: Hi, Im new to the networking world, and I have the following setup;
A domain server at my work where all clients can connect using a static IP address I manually set for each TCP / IP Configuration . The problem is, if the users / customers go home with the laptop, they could use their own home network, they assign IP addresses (dynamic) it leads to a conflict, because I am their laptop to a static IP to use. Is there a way to work intact static IP and PC IP accept a DHCP server in their house?
Help appreciated. Thank you.
Re:alternate config count ++
Re:Yeah, assuming they have a DHCP server at home, you can configure their PRIMARY TCP/IP connection as "dynamic". Then configure the "Alternate Configuration" as "static". But, as pointed out, unless you have a specific need, using Static IPs on workstations in the office is a pain to be avoided.
With this recommended "Alternate Configuration", here's what will happen:
1) First, the laptop will try to find a DHCP server. If it succeeds, it will grab an IP address from the DHCP server.
2) If it fails, then it will assign itself the "Alternate Configuration" address.

Re:Why not just make the work network dynamic IP's assigned by a DHCP server?
Re:Assuming that leagally you allowed to do this.
