VIA KT400 and PC300 DDR – What .? Need info please! [epox 8kha] [pc300]

Q: This is insane given. I was originally holding off from buying a 8KHA Epox PC2100 + and when I heard that the KT333 chipset was around the corner. Now they are out and the new Epox boards are priced simarily (apparently) to the 266A boards I thought “time to upgrdade .” (333 DDR ram, although about 70-80 U.S. dollars more expensive than AUS 266). Now I hear about the KT400 and arrive in Q2 of this year. Is this right? How can that be! Its almost here now and Q2 in little ol Australia my computer dealer has just the possession of the MSI KT333 boards and some PC2700 (which is probably not certified but just overclocked 2100 ram). Can anyone help me out here. Is the KT400 to the next big step in the real world performance and is worth the wait? Thanks for all the comments that my sense of confusion on the lighting moment.

Re:<< The KT400 is supposed to be AGP 8x, support USB 2.0, Firewire, and Serial ATA… it is supposedly all that and a bag of chips. >>

Yeah yeah. Don't worry Serial ATA 2 is very close around the corner also, as well as a whole slew of new features. Btw, why rush to get Serial ATA when all of your old devices will be useless?

AGP8X is the funniest; we'll see a practical improvement from that in about 5 years. USB 2 and FW will be sweet tho (although you could always get PCI upgrade cards … oh wait PCI is getting replaced soon too :( )

It's all one big never-ending upgrade. Get in now or get in never, there's always something better around the corner.

Btw, nice Austin Powers quote, it's a good one ;) !

Re:Thanks for the post guys. I'll probably go for the KT333 because with DDR333 it offers a performance increase over the 266A. I haven't got any specific links to the KT400 just small mentions in the reviews of some of the KT333 boards.

Re:there is always something new right around the corner :)

Re:Boy am i glad i bought my ram when i did (3 X 256 meg sticks of pc 2100 from crucial for $92). I've been using the K75SA for the last couple of months just because i've been debating on which kt266a board to get. I'd stay away from the kt333 personally just cause there's no vast improvement over the kt266a. If you wait for the kt400(which i haven't heard anything about…any links?) then you'll always be waiting for the next big release. just my $0.02.

Re:From what I hear, the new AMD processor, the throughbred will most likely not use a faster fsb. So PC2100 will do you fine, if that is so. Go ahead and get the KT333, its not going to hurt. However the thing to watch out for is the new AMD Hammers coming out q4 2002. Personally, I did a cheap upgrade. All I got was a ECSk75SA and an athlon 1800, costing me about 240 including shipping. This way I can reuse my old sdram and not waste money on expensive ddr. Hope this post helps…
