Vista Upgrade from Windows Marketplace (U.S. / UK Download export legality questions) [windows marketplace] [regional license]

Q: I am wondering, is it legal to have a friend in the U.S. to purchase a Vista Ultimate upgrade from , download the DVD than to send me?

Are a restrictions on Vista, that you stop the installation of a U.S. retail copy of Vista in the UK?

Im quite angry at the price of Vista Ultimate on the lake at the moment, Microsoft seems to have established a royal shafting the UK with a price tag of (todays exchange rate) USD $ 680 for a retail copy of ultimate.

If anyone could shed some light would be appreciated, Im all for improvement, but for the price of a retail copy of Vista more than I might as well buy a new feckin computer already come with it: roll:-D

Thanks 0.

I feel your pain. Ultimate retail goes for the equivalent of $800 here in Mexico.

I'm considering importing one from the US as there's no way I'm paying that much for it, and I actually was wondering the same thing as you (I don't mean to hijack your thread though! :) )

It's a no-win situation, I'd buy an OEM copy for £130 but if I do that I'll have to get both 32 & 64bit versions which would work out to the same price as a retail upgrade because I'll be upgrading my laptop at the end of the year.

You can find it a bit cheaper ,£115 for Ultimate OEM in UK,at Novatech (http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/products/a731×1y0z1p0s0n0m60) .

Re:I'm not sure if it's the EULA or the agreement you make when you download that will get you.

I would be most concerned about violating US export laws. There is encryption technology in Vista that is, I believe, export restricted. Obviously the UK will have lesser export restrictions than many countries but if you get caught trying to ship or carry a restricted copy out of the country you'll end up in PMITAP care of the Department of Homeland Security.

What you are trying to do sounds illegal for a number of reasons.

I believe that I read that the marketplace software was only for us and canadian customers. If this is true then you would be in violation of the eula.

Am I still in violation of the EULA though if a friend of mine (a US resident) purchases it using his US based computer, on US soil, then exports it to me?

In which case I'd assume that's taxable on import..
