Q: We have a small network with firewall, backup machine, DHCP etc.
We have about 4 client machines. We want to add a server to the network to a domain controller to be. I love the features of Active Directory.
We have a subscription to Microsoft Action Pack, so that we can access all the software we need (and 5 client licenses) are. Im having problems installing Windows 2000 Server on one of our spare PCs. I tried with 2 PCs so far – it doesnt even install on one. One is an Athlon 950 machine and the other a P2-350. The Athlon does manage to install (it crashes) and P2 is unstable and gets blue screens. Both machines have a variety of OSS in the last 6 months without access to trouble.
We Small Business Server – this will do what we need?
My boss is prepared to an Intel server board and buy new P4 chip – Is there a guarantee that I will be able to install on Server 2000 to see if it is not stable in our other so-called “perfect” hardware?
Sorry walking:)

Re:That is a strange set of issues you are having on the install. I helped set up 2k server on a tyan trinity s1854, with a celly 400. It was for a senior project, and it works fine, with mssql and a custom made app.
Maybe the sugestion about ACPI is on the mark, but I do not think you need a P4 and a server board to do this.

Re:Well, now I know SBS does have AD.
I learned something from this thread as well.
What you can do is install 9x on the machine and then run a hardware compatibilty check and see what comes up.

Re:Noggin: Were talking about bluescreening during installation – I havent had a chance to install any 3rd party drivers by that stage (not that I intend to either)!
With regards to the stop codes, see this (http://{$MySite}/messageview.cfm?catid=32&threadid=1042783) thread.
guy: Thanks for the kind offer. I dont think I'll have any trouble setting up AD (we already have all other infrastructure we need such as DHCP and a Smoothwall firewall/router as our gateway). I'll send you a PM if I have any trouble – the offer is much appreciated.
How To Use Windows 7 Quick and Easy Guide
Re:I don't know much about the SBS and if it has AD or not. But I am running 2K AS at my house, and it is rock stable (until I begin screwing around with the settings for lab work).
When you install AD, it automatically install DNS for you. This way it is easier for people on the network to map drives and printers.
I also suggest setting up the DHCP capabilities on the server, as it will also provide the gateway, and DNS for the other systems on the network.
Once your DNS is set up, you can then set up DNS forwarding, what this does is send all requests for external websites to your ISPs DNS servers. Plus, to help speed up DNS searches, you can begin looking for public DNS servers and enter those addresses as well. If you need help with setting this up, I am on AIM as guy69, or on MSIM as ulfwald@hotmail.com. I can work with you over IM pretty easy. I will just have to schedule a time to be available.

We have access to Small Business Server – does this do what we require?

Sorry to ramble
It's highly doubtful that the bare OS is bluescreening on good hardware.
It's likely either third-party device drivers that you've installed, or hardware problems. Can you post the STOP codes for us? You can find them in the system event log under and event logged by Save Dump.

Re:Thanks so much for an educated reply guy
OK I'll have him look into this. I'm quite frustrated that we have to buy new hardware. All we want are the AD features – nothing more. Our network is unlikely to grow as we have 2 employees (I am one of them) and have no plans to expand!
Does your answer mean that SBS would be unsuitable? Does it include AD?
Many thanks for your help – We'll go with new hardware and 2k Server.

Tell him to get this. Plus, check out the Microsoft Hardware compatibility list on the MS website to see if the hardware you want to get is on there.
Your older machine maynot be APCI compatible, this can stop a lot of installs of 2K server. Delegate it to the role of workstation.
Once installed, you can set up AD, which will also install DNS for you. You can then set up DHCP on the server and use it to do all your addressing and DNS.
Build a better machine for the server, it will be more stable, run better, and allow you to grow your network without really taxing the server resources too bad in the future.
Also, try and get the Advanced server software, as your business grows, You can use the clustering capabilities for the Advanced server to help in load balancing.
