Weird “Stall” in Win2k with MSI K7T Pro-2A u0026 Duron [creative 52x] [cas 2]

Q: Hi, I have a system I built

Ive with the following hardware for some of my family members.

MSI K7T Pro 2A
Duron 800
256MB Micron 133Mhz
Asus 7100 Geforce MX 45GB 7200 RPM ATA100 32MB
IBM drive
Creative CDROM

Anyways 52X, I have noticed that when I try to download or any larger (u003e 500k or so) Copy the file from another machine to this new, almost always this strange pause after grab between 50 and 100k of the file. Usually the yield never. This happens with both HTTP downloads, FTP downloads.

Also, I use Windows Explorer to freeze me while browsing the network sites u0026quot; u0026quot, which Ive never seen in Win 2k before.

What s Bizzare is more I have problems copying stuff from one machine operating u0026quot; u0026quot, the shares of that machine because it accuses u0026quot; Can not copy [filename]: The specified network name is no longer available. u0026quot;

Does anyone have suggestions what I might be wrong? Ive been going nuts trying to figure out what is going on here, so if anyone can help me, Id really appreciate your it.

Thank!

-Scott

Re:Well it seems like to me, you might have bad RAM.
I built a msi k7t pro2a system with a amd t-bird 1 GHZ
and i would have problems copying .cab files and certain dll files.
Coudlnt figure out for my life what the problem was. i tried switching CD-Rom to
hard drive and everythign you can think of. even returned my mobo for a new one.
finally i thought maybe its the ram so i stuck anew piece of ram and got rid of the old
ones and never had any more problems.

Re:Got it. It was a bad network card. As soon as I put in a spare card I had laying around, everything started to work just great.

Thanks for the help!

Re:So, I flashed my bios (I think), but when I boot up, it still refers to Bios V1.0A… How do I know if it worked?

I'm still getting the weird "pause" — I've now installed Windows ME and I get the same screwy behavior…

Thanks!

Re:Not sure, but it could be BIOS as well… just to be safe here are the links to the latest bios:

Latest Bios V. 2.2 (http://www.msi.com.tw/support/bios/mainboard/6xxx/k7tpro2a/wk7tpro2av22.exe)
Beta Bios with more options for "tweakers and powerusers" (http://www.msi.com.tw/support/bios/mainboard/6xxx/k7tpro2/wk7tpro2v10b14.exe)

I don't know what BIOS you have in that mobo, but if it's an older one you might get better luck with one of these instead… at least it's worth a shot ;)

Re:I went ahead and installed the Via drivers and things still behave the same… I got a Linksys 10/100 NIC, but their site doesn't seem to be up right now, so I'll have to wait until tomorrow to check for an updated driver from them…

I could easily take that NIC back and get a different one too, if that might be the culprit. I've used Linksys cards in other machines (although this is a newer one with Wake on Lan)…

Any other suggestions?

Thanks!

-Scott

Re:First thing that comes to mind is VIA drivers… have you installed the latest 4-in-1's ? If that doesn't help, I'd start working on drivers for your NIC and see if that helps any…
