What do you think of my new system?

Q: $ 1884.00 shipped w / tax (none) Generation 4

Dimension XPS Desktop: Pentium 4 Processor w / HT Tech Extreme Edition (3.46GHz, 1066 FSB 775 Northwood core)
Microsoft Windows XP Professional
1 GB DDR2 SDRAM 533MHz (2 DIMMs) 9775. 031.44 MB Floppy Disk Drive
160 GB EIDE SATA Hard Drive (7200 RPM) Nvidia GeForce 6800 GTO
256MB Graphics Blaster Audigy 2 ZS PCIE
Sound (D) Card w / Dolby 5.1, IEEE 1394 capability
48X Drive
16x DVD CD RW + / – RW w / dbl layer write capability
460watt Zippy PSU

Its got everything I wanted for the last few years . DVD burner (looks like a solid), 1gig ram, decent size hard drive, Audigy2ZS (wonder how the new integrated Intel Azalia compare? Are 925XE so has that too), a Shader Model 3.0 card ( that will have the extra 4 pipes unlocked, or sold for a X850XT PE or 6800 Ultra PCIE as they become available, decent power (presumably Dell uses Zippys) port on the front mic / audio (did this for my headset for quite some time ). . and all packed into a nice looking case (something else I need) 0.

Anyway, either personally congratulate flame . but Im happy for the money . and it must be for a while (last everything what I did, at the end) Athlon XP 1700 + 0.

Goodbye (kinda sad in a way) 0.
But this is a much better link to my 2005FPW.

I also read somewhere that the XPS systems of food on the bottom of the matter in its own compartment . I think it has something to do with the fact the BTX, but the space is a cool addition.

Re:You won?t be rich for long making decisions like a P4 EE ;)

A few tips;
3000+ Winchester has been a proven overclocker on air. It will reach 3500+ speeds @ much less in cost.
Buying an FX is a waste of money and you will not notice a difference.
The hard drive is your bottleneck. Getting a fast drive will improve overall performance in just using the computer for general things a great deal more than anything else.
You might as well spend the cash that you save from not getting an FX, and get a Raptor 74 for your OS drive. Hell, get two for the money (and RAID0 or 1 them or just use them separate) you save on not getting a FX (or stock 3500 for that matter). If you use the raptors separate, make sure you tell windows not to make use VM (pagefile/swapfile) on the same drive your windows install is. Rather, any other drive like the second raptor (or anything else really).

If you?re really looking to spend two grand, you can get a system FAR better than that dell, but you have to be willing to (gasp) screw things in and (horror) plug things in. It?s really not so bad and you feel more accomplished. You can get a SLi system with two 6800GTs (can be overclocked later) to match your display (I assume the resolution is better than 1280×1024). This will blow anything any other setup has to offer right now. Even one 6800GT (~$400) would be better than 2 6600GTs (~$400 but takes up two slots and causes more heat etc) for your monitors native resolution with all the AA and AF on, and honestly, you don?t buy a high end SLi system to have settings turned off.

Also, DDR2 isn?t going to improve things much over DDR 3200 right now. You simply won?t see or feel a difference. Still, $1800 you could get a gig or two of faster memory if you so choose to.

You can go all out and get a sexy case as well. http://www.xoxide.com/ssttj03.html
Don?t forget to choose a good PSU as well.

Re:Its canceled. :(

Damn P4EE just didnt perform like I thought they did..

but I guess I hadnt looked into them since the first one came out.. when they were more impressive.

Oh well.

Looks like its back to hunting, otherwise if I find a PCIE video card.. probably get a 3500+ A64.

I made a better system with a 19" LCD for under 1200.
Im not sure why people would register for this website and post in these forum and then go buy a premade computer. Must be rich.

Actually, technically I am "rich" to most people.. I'm worth over 1 million. Thats without life insurance, pure assets. Sorry for bragging.

Thanks though for the sling my way.

When I get done, I bet whatever I get is faster than yours.. I already have a lead on ya with a 2005FPW (20.1inch widescreen LCD). ;)

But this system is getting canceled. I'm incredibly disappointed after looking at the benchmarks of this processor. What a shame.

If I end up building my own (and having the joy of finding a fast PCIE video card for under $1000), it'll be a FX55.

Re:Hey i like refurbs.. nearly everything i buy is refurb..

grrr.

Way I see it, refurb is better than new. Because what was wrong with the new ones is now fixed! :)

I will probably cancel this order in the morning anyway, but I'm goign to keep investigating the P4EE tonight/this morning.

Re:Sorry but if thats a refurb system, you got a bad deal.

Re:Hmm.. I'm looking at some benchmarks of the P4EE.. not nearly as impressive as I thought..

its one of those processors you assume is so great, and then when you actually look into it..

I expected it to beat the 3.6/3.8ghz P4 Prescott but it does very rarely.

Will probably be canceling this one in the morning. Goign to keep looking at benchmarks but I'm fairly disappointed.

Re:Its a refurb system.. so hopefully its not a newer GTO.

I've noticed them going for $400 on ebay as well.. ;) Just in case!

Re:From what I've read Dell has really locked down the newer GTOs, so its not a sure thing anymore.

Re:Yeah its quite a bit faster.
I prefer Nvidia cards, but theres not a whole lot out there available for PCIE, so I'm a bit less picky. I did some searches on the GTO and it appears to be a 6800GT thats been neutered to 12pipes. But everyone who has tried has gotten the full GT pipes working with no problems. Which is encouraging.

Should hit stock GT speeds with no problems. The guys whose thread I read was running theirs at Ultra speeds.

6800 Ultra is my personal dream card… but this will be acceptable if it unlocks and clocks well.

Re:Originally posted by: guy
The GTO appears to be a nicely clocked card.. but we'll see if it will unlock. I'd sell it and get a X850XT PE if it doesnt.

Well I have an x850XT PE, and it's very nice. And I'm pretty sure it'll be faster than the GTO..

Re:$1,900 for an Intel? The EE is an extreme waste of money…

Re:Originally posted by: guy
Just so you know the GTO is not a real GT. You may want to get the real deal if you're going to spend that much on a PC.

Yeah I know. I'm insanely anal on computer parts.. I've done a YEAR of research.. and 2 months of hunting for a new system.. comparing in-depth whether to build or buy.

I foudn now is a horrible time to build OR buy.. considering dual core coming out, new SATA.. but I just could NOT stand this 1700+/Geforce 4 4200 man.. not anymore.

I waited a year already (I was waiting for PCIE on AMD and S939).. and ended up with this.. who'd thought.

I'd built if finding a 6800 GT in PCIE wasnt such a total pain the ass (at MSRP), and I missed out on that Chumbo order. X800XL is awesome too.. but again, absolutely sick of waiting.

I think you might have missed this-

a shader model 3.0 card (that will have the 4 additional pipes unlocked, or its being sold for a X850XT PE or 6800 Ultra PCIE if they come available

The GTO appears to be a nicely clocked card.. but we'll see if it will unlock. I'd sell it and get a X850XT PE if it doesnt.

Since you already bought, enjoy your system. It wasn't my intention to make you feel bad about the purchase. It's good price for system with that processor. Have fun with it!

No its ok. I'm looking for honest opinions (and I agree on the processor, but its so nice).
I can still cancel the order. So its like opinion time, really fast. :)

Re:That is a very good price for the system, have fun with it. My alienware cost the same. Couple things in mine are faster, but your proc is much better.

Re:I'm neither for, or against building.. I'm very good at it as all my systems are always stable.. but I understand the importance of PSUs and know what the good parts are.

If I was given a choice between building a system (and not saving money), or buying it prebuilt.. I dont have a e-penis need to build it myself.. I'll take it prebuilt.

This is my first bought system since my Quantex Pentium 133 (now out of business, thats been quite some time ago.. and I paid more than I paid for this system :) ).

Re:Dell is a good buy if you are not into building. Even if you are into building, sometimes Dell has some great deals that is hard to pass up.

Enjoy your new system.

Re:Looks aight…but the P4 EE?

Why oh why?

The 3.4 would've been very good, or the 3.6 possibly better for less.

Re:I know its not the best price/performance processor. I would NEVER build a system with it from scratch, and never thought I'd own one.. but considering everything I think its a good deal. I havent seen a $800 system with a 3.2 fully loaded like this one. If so, I'd cancel and buy the one you are mentioning. :) I dont mind paying a little more for the cream of the crop.. cuz I dont usually get that too often.

I've been scoping for WEEKS and havent seen a $800 system with a PCIE 6800 GTO/1gig ram and all that stuff. I'd bought it in a millisecond.

edit- I guess I've seen similar 8400 systems@3.2 for about $1000 now that I think about it. But I think for the XPS Gen4 (has better parts) and the processor is worth it. I had decided I'd only stick with the XPS stuff.. I dont really dig the rest of the Dell line.

Re:Processor is a ripoff. You're paying almost $1000 more to get that processor. I've seen similar Dell system with 3.2e for around $800.
