Q: Just a simple question. For a 17 or 19 “CRT, which is a good refresh rate for gaming? I got from my father Ahold old 17″ Sony Trinitron CRT for gaming purposes with my current LCD. I have some UT2K loaded and noted that while the picture looked really love to stand, the second I started moving the statue began to diminish. It appears that this beautiful monitor can only do so in a setting 1280×1024 60Hz and makes it beat faster FPS games like crazy. So now Im looking into getting a CRT with a refresh for better gaming and just selling it, but what would be good specs to shoot for? I would also like to keep costs as low as I can continue. Thanks!
Best Answer: at least 20 inches,at least 5ms responce time. at least 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio. if u plan to run eyefinity the screnn size could be smaller.

75Hz minimum, 85Hz isusually the least people use for flicker free.

Are you sure you arnt confusing your CRT for your LCD. LCDs are notorious for the "ghosting" which you see, however, CRTs shouldnt ghost at all.
Yea, I'm sure. I'm pretty confident that I can tell the difference between an LCD and a CRT
By "ghosting" earlier I was referring to the flickering in a fast moving game caused by the refresh rate being too slow to keep up with the movement in the game. I went ahead and ordered the Samsung VPRmatrix flatscreen that is on rebate at BB right now. 17" that can do 1600×1200 at 75Hz, so I imagine that it will do pretty well at the 1280×1024 setting that my dual monitor setup will be running at.
Re:Just to let you know. Windows XP Service Pack 1 gives you about 75-85Hz refresh rate on games. Works wonderfully on mine. Plus if it's a DirectX based game you can use Nvidias drivers to override the default refresh rates.

Re:Personally I wouldnt use less than 85hz for long term use, and have my own monitor set to 100hz. Down to preference, but 75hz is general minimum for anybody, 85hz being the usual preferred refresh. Is it set to 60hz in windows adapter settings, or just looking at the monitor settings while ingame? I suspect it would do at least 1024×768 @ 85hz, if you want to save cash…
Personally Im very happy with my Samsung 757DFX, probably updated models out now (bought it 1 year ago). Very good dot pitch and refresh rates/resolutions for a monitor at it's price level (probably midrange).

although some games default to 60, so the question is really irrelevant if you ask me
but i run my monitor NO LESS than 75.
Re:Yea, it is one of the old sony multiscans. I'm currently running both monitors off a Visiontek GF4 Ti4600.
Re:Radeon 9500/9700 series supports up to 85Hz at 1600*1200*32 resolution; so best is to get a matching monitor for it; I bought SONY CPD-G410R this weekend and it has identical max. refresh at that resolution, so it's perfect match…. that's also the max. resolution which most games support.
Look for good 19" model which supports thses parameters….
Your old SONY has most likely 60Hz limit at 1280*1024 (have old Sony MultiScan Trinitron 17SF2 with the same limitation of 60Hz); only newer higher quality 17" models go higher .

Re:I think most of them will, you just have to read the specs.
I use viewsonic, they aren't too expensive but run pretty good.
Re:No, it won't do anything above 60 when set at a rez of 1280X1024. Any decently priced 17" monitors out there that will do 75Hz or higher?
Re:first of all, be sure the 60Hz is really a limitation of the monitor.
If you are using windowsXP, it defaults to 60Hz and you need to use
a utility to get it to run at your monitors' capabilities. (I like RivaTuner… there are
several others too)
75 will eliminate most flicker because the "flicker" you see is just a phase difference
with the 60Hz flicker of the lighting in your room.
(85 is my favorite because it doesn't share harmonics with 60)
