Re:AMEN– windows, esp the 9x/ME series eat it hardcore. NT=better, but, well, is still NT. Win2000/XP=not too bad at all.

Re:Buying more ram would be a better idea. It doesn't cost much.
Weird software programs that mess with system stuff are just going to add more points of failure to your machine.
