Re:The cool thing about ordering them is I don't have to play the waiting game, calling the store every couple hours, driving down and possibly driving back empty handed because none were really in stock. Who gets what faster is really a roll of the dice though. Mainly because some companies will ship out the games over websites a day earlier and sometimes companies like best buy will "accidently" put a game out on the shelves 2 days too early.
Re:I got either UT2k4 or Unreal 2 (can't remember which) a day earlier than it hit stores because I pre ordered adnd they shipped it early so it would arrive on time, and instead it arrived early.
Re:In the days where I bought massive amounts of games, I "preordered" from ebgames.com and often got them the same day the store put them on the shelves., however if I were you, I'd wait till the game had at least one major patch released.

If i woulda known that companys ship before, so you get it on release day, i woulda gone for it online so it'd be waiting for me. I always see it say something like ships on release day, so i figured it'd be however long shipping takes from release date. Hope i dont work next tuesday.

If you pre-order it from amazon.com they usually ship it in such a way so that you receive the item on the day it's released.

Re:My experience is that the companies ship out the game a few day before depending on your shipping method, so you get it about as fast. If you get it in store you can return it easily if something is messed up though.
