What is the ultimate PC Gaming Rig? [ultimate pc gaming] [monster gaming]

Q: Sometimes I dream about building a monster PC gaming rig (FX-55, 6800GT SLI, etc), and Im probably not alone here. If you have an unlimted budget to put together the most powerful machine you can buy today, what would it look like? So far all I could think of that would be creative is like buying a cooling system for mad AMD quad Opteron 852s (problems with finding a MOBO that supports processors and SLI) and overclock like crazy. Here is what I so far on my list of “ rig”:

Processor (s): AMD Opteron Quad 852s
MOBO: Tyan – Quad Opteron 800-8XVID 2U
Vid Card: Radeon X850 XT Platinum (Do not think there is a PCIe Mobo for Quad Ops)
Hard Disk: Segate ST373453LW 73.4GB Ultra 320 SCSI (68 PIN) 3.6ms 15000rpm 8 MB

Right now I do not think the FX-55 can not be beat because of SLI support. But maybe it might just 4 Ops (probably not many games do not make use of parallel processing).

Best Answer: Processor = Core2 Ex6800
Graphics = GeForce 7900 GTX SLI

That is just my opinion though, hope it helps!

Re:I know it's not the best use for the amount of money… but the thread is not about the money. the only reason am saying opteron is that you cannot use two FX chips or X2 chips in one mobo. someday in the future when games become multi-threaded, this system would rock.

Re:Originally posted by: guy
what about using two opteron 875's (dual core) then using vapochill for overclocking (which will negate the clockspeed advantage of the FX-55) on a tyan dual nForce pro mobo with dual 16x PCI-E using two 6800 ultras with 512 ddr3 each (OC'd as well using vapochill).

Dual or quad cores would be a waste for a gaming rig. However, with the right graphics card, would be a dream CAD station.

Re:opertons would not benefit gaming ppl…it would be a waste of money and litterally would see no gains in gaming….plus go ahead and try to find and OC friendly dual core mobo…

also the tyan is supposed to be good.

Whoah…Where the hell do you find a CRT monitor for $4750??? Apple's 30" LCD is cheaper than that!!

i looked up crt on froogle, and recorded the most expensive one. :P

lol there is one more expensive than that.

thats the same one i posted. just at a more expensive site. :)

Dayum…:Q That has got to be aimed more at the CAD/CAM, Engineer-type workstation market.

Re:What you would need for storage is a few of these (http://www.curtisssd.com/products/drives/nitroxe/) bad boys.

No price is listed, so you know it's up there. I saw a similar drive for about $10K.

Re:I think using Raptors or having a RAID setup just doesn't really make sense. Just getting the fastest/best 15k RPM 74GB scsi drive, then a big seagate for backup would work great.

Re:Originally posted by: w00t
u dont wnat to get opterons for gaming and quad it stupider and you dont need scsi for gaming either.

SCSI absolutely would be included in an ultimate gaming rig. SCSI will load maps without question faster than conventional hard drives.

Re:id take my rig…right now a little over 4000$, but i would definately like to add a vapochill…

Re:Originally posted by: theman

hehehehehehe, could be better, maybe some scsi's and better gfx cooling.

I saw one who used the vapochill on his videocard, so add two extra vapochill units for gfx cooling :P

Absolutely NO point building a awesome PC gaming rig when the current Games are created to run on a Radeon 8500/GF3. True, But I will say Half-Life2 didn't like my GF3Ti too much, But it loved my 6800 :)

Yeah, i ran a R8500 till i upgraded to a 9800xt over a year ago . . . .

my point is – unless you are runnning at super-hi resolution with lots of AA – you aren't going to 'see' [much of a] a difference in HL2 with your 6800 and a uber-rig. ;)

kind of a waste with curent gen games . . . . i am planning a last AGP upgrade – the 6800ultra IF the supply is good and the proce drops this Fall – getting a nextgen console and "sitting tight" until the Physics processors, dual-core CPU, multicore GPUs AND PC games "catch up" – probably in '08 . . . . until then i'll save a boatload of $$$ on [not] upgrading computer HW. ;)

carry on dreamin'

:D

it'd look a lot like an Xbox360 :P

Re:overclocked fx-55 or 4000+ san deigo would perform better for gaming since games are not optimized for multiply CPUs…and with those you can get the dual 512mb 6800 ultras and be the uber 3l33t money waster

Re:You wouldn't want quad opterons for current games, SCSI will be good though.

Re:I agree..but having SCSI certainly wouldn't hurt anything…
