Q: I just want a simple shell-integrated right-click option to scan files for viruses and do not like a ton resource-heavy stuff is running 24 / 7. I have no need for active protection in an AV program.
There are so many out there and I try a few out, but what is your favorite? Preferably something free .
Best Answer: Try the following programs , hope they help .
Malwarebytes free .

SuperAntiSpyware Free
http://download.cnet.com/SuperAntiSpywar…
Update them and do a quick scan with both apps .
The above two are legit and free programs .
Good Luck

Re:I've just changed form AVG to Antivir since my computers got infected using AVG.
Re:I have tried the free versions of AVG and Avast!. I chose Avast! because I wanted seamless proactive e-mail support for Thunderbird, something earlier versions of AVG had issues with.
Cannot say which is better at finding virii because I've never had one
.
Re:Thanks for the reply. I'm using Antivir XP (found it on guy's page) and it seems to be just what I've been looking for.
A friend of mine installed Norton and man, does it ever have a lot of bloat to it. I had no idea there was a free AV program that was so efficient like this.
Re:You ought to be able to disarm the real-time scanner on practically any antivirus software, so the field is still wide open based on your criteria. You can find some detection test results here (http://www.av-comparatives.org) for a bunch of antivirus software, and guy has a roundup you can check out here (http://www.schadentech.com) with more detection info too.
