What programs can be used to identify a bottleneck? [rig specifications] [running processes]

Re:Any errors at all in the event log?

Does PerfMon show anything?

What about just looking at Task Manager over time? Any spikes?

Re:PSU has been swapped twice. 420 to 350 to 520. Motherboard appears very clean, no bulging or leaking caps. I'm thinking it might be a HDD issue, but I'm not entirely sure the best way to go about testing the HDD itself for data consistency.

Re:have you tried swapping out the PSU

also you might want to check the motherboard for leaking / bad caps
a few years ago alot of motherboards got the bad ones

Humm… tough problem… have you rechecked all of your bios settings? Perhapes just for kicks maybe you should clear your cmos, reinstall XP, and retry. Just tossing ideas out there.

BIOS are currently set to defaults (this is done whenever I do configurations) and all timings are automatic. Each set of RAM and the processors I have used have been properly identified and timings correctly set (verified with CPU-Z). =/

Just running out of ideas.. might be the motherboard, but those NF7's are just so rock-solid.

I think first we should rule out heat. What are your temps in your system? Dust and hair clogging a heatsink will significantly degrade performance over time. Lets start with that.

SiSoft Sandra comes to my mind for benching software. Its easy to use and will help you identify potential bottlenecks. There are other tools, of course … Before you do any benching, please be sure you're not suffering from heat related problems. Benching can place quite a bit of stress on hardware sometimes. You want to make sure your cooling is doing the job before you start running benching software.

Nah. As I mentioned I've done numerous hardware swaps. All of my machines are dusted weekly, and they are very well-kept inside. Each new application of the processor heatsink fan comes with a full swabdown with 97% alcohol and re-application of AC5. My CPU temps are 26 Cel, case temps 28 Cel. Systems are kept in a very well-cooled area. Heat is definitely not a problem in this scenario. Next?

The final system listed in my on my signature has been giving me trouble lately. I've swapped in a AGP 6800U to try and identify if the issues are graphics card related.. hasn't much helped.

Symptoms: A brief but annoying stutter in all . This has never been there before, and this machine has a fresh install of the OS. It is sometimes used for light gaming (IE WoW, etc) and the response time on this machine can only be summed up as bogged down.

For example, my main rig runs WoW maxed with full on everything. The machine in question used to do the same, but has recently developed a very severe sluggish feel to practically any graphics and CPU intensive applications.. IE WoW is stressed to run 30FPS with all settings set to MINIMUM – which considering that WoW with minimum graphics settings can be run on a integrated Intel 64MB 3D bus leeching off 512MB system RAM.. so in essence, something is up.

I've tried a few hardware swaps at this point.. RAM, CPU (switched from a 3200 Barton to a 3000, and vise versa), and have swapped graphics cards from a 128MB 9800 Pro to a 256MB 6800 Ultra.. RAM has been OCZ, Corsair, and Kingston, all in dual channel paired increments of 1 or 2MB.. and still this stuttering and overall sluggish feeling on practically all applications persists.

OS is a fresh install of XP pro with proper driver install and application of SP2 and app security updates.. rungs 27 processes on boot, and still bogs down under practically any stress.

At this point I'm sort of at a loss for what to do to further identify what is causing my bottleneck from the hardware side. What applications might assist me in finding what could be my current problem? I'm <—> close from simply rebuilding this machine from scratch – it's essentially just designed as an all purpose file-storage and overall backup gaming machine..

Thanks!
