What to do if no OS CD? [toshiba laptop] [serial key]

Q: So I buy a , and comes with no os cd . If I want to reinstall, what should I do? Is there a special program should I use to know what my ?

Best Answer: did you try this with an other H.D.D?
if i were you i would installed the HDD on a different PC
backed up the info on it
Formatted the whole HDD even MBR sectors
tare a part all the partitions and setting new ones
and tested it again

if it didn't work
i would install Ubuntu or open suse just to see if this problem is on Windows only if not i would install the old cpu and tested it again

it might not make sense but your problem is wired i guess the only way is trail and error

Re:And here is a link to a program that will give you the IDs and numbers of everything in your computer, including software and hardware. I call it "Jelly Bean on Steroids."

Re:I got it from a thread here anyway and used it myself a couple of weeks ago. Couldn't find the OEM sticker laying around in a desk drawer. :-)

Re:thanks for the Jelly Bean link – very helpful

Re:Milord . . . thanks for the MJB link. A useful addition to the bag of tools. :)

Re:damn you guy! you're getting annoying! i was going to suggest the exact same thing! ;)

Re:HAH. Didn't even occur to me to suggest that. I just answered the exact question asked.

Re:Key should be on the sticker on the bottom of the laptop.

Re:Magic Jelly Bean Keyfinder (http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder.shtml) will let you get the license key. However of course you still need to have an OS CD to be able to install it. Any OEM install CD should allow you to use the license key. You may run into issues with activation, and have to actually make a call to Microsoft to activate, as they have been shutting off Internet activation for big-name OEM license keys.

Also check to make sure that Toshiba didn't put a hidden partition on the hard drive, which some brands do, that can be used for "restoring" the hard drive to the original configuration. It still ends up with all the OEM software add-ins that way of course.
