Q: As a puzzle game (Zelda, Metroid, etc.).
or something with a tough boss or level.
Re:If it's fun I stick with it, if it's tiresome I look it up.
Re:If I get to a puzzle, in open up Gamefaqs directly, I have no interest at all in wracking my brain for a puzzle. I also check if the story isn't clear on where to go next. Like in Dragon Quest 8 for instance, I find that around level 35 and after, everything you need to do isn't clear, it's like 'Go find the pirate cave' but damn me if I am going to explore the map for hours to find it, I prefer to go on Gamefaqs, get the location and just keep on playing.
Re:It depends on the game… for an action game I'll try things for a few days until I've run out of anything I can think of to try and then I'll finally look for a hint… but if it's a puzzle game or an adventure game I'll never look at the walk through… because that is the whole game and if I look at a walkthrough it's all over. I still haven't completed the hard version of Monkey Island 3 or Monkey Island 4 (though I am nearly done with Monkey Island 4). I give up on them for months at a time and then go back to them later and usually manage to get a little farther than I got before. If I look at a walkthrough for them though, there is no "action" component to the game to enjoy, it'll just be all over… so it just isn't worth it to look at a walkthrough when I can go back to the game in a couple of months and continue to enjoy it

In RPGs many puzzles are stupid makework without a good clue (most lever / switch / dial puzzles). For those I stop and go FAQ myself right away.
Yeah, I remember Lufia and Lufia 2 were like that.
I never went more than 10 minutes on any one puzzle before I looked up a hint. My idea of gaming is making progress. I dont give a rats butt about cheating.
EDIT: Anacronox was another one. Although with that game I was able to get all the way up to the big library before needing a hint. The puzzles seemed to make a lot more sense to me.
Near as I can figure out, I have a glitch in the game. Even with all the hints I cant make it through the big doors in the library.
Re:i only refer to a faq if i hear that a game has a ton of extras.
Re:I try it 3-4 times before I go to gamefaq.

For puzzles or boss battles I think I have a fair shot at solving I'll usually try over at least a couple of days (give up one night, come back the next) before looking up the answer.
ditto. gamefaqs have saved me so much time in RPGs. and all those secret locations and items are nearly impossible to find unless you play way too much.
Re:If it's a game I don't really care for, ten minutes at most. If it's a pretty good game, I'll mess around for about an hour.
Re:Depends on how much I enjoy the gameplay, and how much time I'm willing to invest.
Re:I don't think much of using walkthroughs. I'll replay a lot before giving in to checking an FAQ, and there have only been a couple of times where I found it necessary to refer to one, yet went on to deem the game worth finishing.
After playing through a game once though I feel okay about reading up on what other people did or what they discovered that I may have missed or disregarded the first time.
Re:Save. Reload. Reload. Reload. Save a bit later. Reload. Reload. Reloadx99999.
FAQ.

Re:Hey. This moved.
I try to only do so after I've beaten a game and want to either go back or play it through again to get everything, such as heart pieces in Zelda.
