Q: SDR Radeon 32MB PCI, AGP GeForce3 Ti200 AGP or Voodoo3? Is that much CPU? Dual 933-radeon in system, a GeForce3 933, while only some 450 Voodoo3.
Best Answer: I also have a toshiba satellite and through working with it for 6 months i have to be honest i dont use the intervideo i think its ****… but you got to make your own decision…
Re:The Radeon SDR supports Hardware Motion Compensation, Subpixel Acceleration, inverse Discrete Cosine Transformation. The GeForce3 however, has only HWMC. iDCT can dramatically reduce CPU utilization if supported, and bring CPU utilization of 1+GHz CPUs to single digit percentages.
Re:No, GeForce cards do not have any support for DVD playback. The GeForce4 is the first one to support such features. Furthermore, even if the Radeon does support DVD playback, it is not fully supported. It does most of the work, but there are still some tasks that are left up to the CPU. Of course, it does mean much smoother playback, higher quality playback, and lower system requirements none the less.
Re:the geforce cards have all got hardware support for dvd, the voodoo iirc do not. Personally i would go with the agp geforce – you might want to play the odd game once in a while
Re:The Radeon would be better, both in terms of DVD performance and DVD image quality. The Voodoo3 would have better signal quality though, as in its general image quality would be better. A single 933MHz system would probably be sufficient, I don't think software DVD players are multithreaded to take advantage of SMP.
Re:Radeons and all ATi cards since the RageII have full DVD playback support that works fine all the way down to a K6-2-300MHz.
Re:As far as I know, none of those cards have any kind of hardware DVD playback capabilities at all. Therefore, the playback would be entirely dependent on your CPU power. However, the Radeon will provide better 2D output, and therefore the image quality of the DVD would be slightly higher. Your dual 933 system would play DVDs better simply because it has the most CPU power. You will need a software DVD player to watch DVDs on any of them.
Re:I would guess that the Radeon would be better.
Re:My PERSONAL OPINION ONLY is that the ATi card will have slightly higher image quality, but if you're watching on a fuzzy monitor it's not really going to be all that different between any of them. The dually will decode the MPEG streams faster, but it all plays at 1X anyways.
