Best Answer: The domain name is irrelevant for interacting with the other computers on your lan. you can put anything in, you don't have to own a domain, nor be using a domain on your windows network. The domain name is just the hostname that your *nix computer will be using, but like I said, if you aren't using domains or anything like that, it's completely irrelevant and you'll only ever see it in use on the linux machine.
Just install samba, and make sure you have it configured correctly. If you are just using workgroups, you will need to enter the name of your workgroup in the samba config and give it a NetBIOS name, and your *nix machine will be able to see the other windows computers on the workgroup after that, if samba is set up properly.
The trick in getting your linux pc to see the computers in your workgroup is all in the samba config. Don't forget to stop and start smbd and nmbd after you make changes to the conf files.

This gets asks what seems like daily, but there is no best distro to use and you'll get diferrent answers from everyone. I'd go to DistroWatch and check out the Top 10 or 15 of the past month, do a little reading on them, and pick a few Live CDs to try first.
That being said, here's a few I'd recommend that make the transition from Windows a little easier, IMHO (in no particular order):
Ubuntu
PCLinuxOS
Fedora
MEPIS
Xandros
