Which routers to obtain the CCNA? [hi folks] [ebay]

Q: ,
Im thinking about getting CCNA certified, and am wondering what kind of equipment I need to get to the lab. Ive seen packages w / March 2501 routers and a switch 1912 for around $ 600-700 on . Is it worth anything?

Any tips are appreciated.

Best Answer: You need 3 routers and 2 switches
I recommended
Three 2611 Cisco router; £30 each
Two serial wic card; £30 each
Two/Three 2950 switch; £50
a few cross over cables and console cables.

Re:Well really, that money for the kit on is worth it. If you were take a prep class for the CCNA, or a boot camp, you'd probably spend close to that anyways, and you dont get to take home any equipment. I'd say you'll have no problems passing the router/switch config part of the CCNA with the equipment in that kit if you know how to configure everything covered on the CCNA inside and out.

Re:Thanks for clarifying my questions.
One more question: how many routers & switches would I need??

I'm not attending any class for this but self-studying instead. I wish I could've had access to some equipment w/o having to pay big $$ though…

Re:Where are you getting CCNA certified? Just wondering. I took the class through my high school's ROP program, and they had about 8 routers, various switches, lots of cables, NICs, PCs, laptops… great learning environment. The course is only half the knowledge. There's a LOT you have to learn in person with the hardware. Those routers should be good for learning on.

Re:No, I meant that. I haven't seen a sim yet that can simulate a bad serial cable, a bent ethernet pin, or a weird OSPF problem. Sim's are good to learn commands, and the IOS interface. They're bad for simulating a real environment.

I think the current CCNA exam test is based on 2500 routers and 1900 switches. The ones you mentioned will be fine.

I'm studying for my CCNP routing exam, and I used a 4500 (I'm pretty sure thats what it is), 5 2501's, and 2600, along with a couple 1900 series switches.

Re:Thanks for the reply.

Real routers dont always work as perfectly as sim's do
Did you mean the other way around??

Actually I was hoping you could tell me exactly which model(s) to get…

Re:If you dont have experience with Cisco stuff, it's definitely worth it. Without experience on the real equipment, you're a 'paper CCNA'. Experience with the equipment is going to give you a leg up on the people that dont have the experience. Granted, not everybody has the resources to get some real equipment, but if you can afford the equipment get it. That equipment will help you as well should you decide to progress onto the CCNP stuff.

If you cant afford the equipment, look at simulators. Personally, I dont like them as I haven't found a sim that really behaves like a router yet. Real routers dont always work as perfectly as sim's do. They're a good alternative though if you cant get the real stuff.
