Q: I am in the market for something the internet on my Apple PowerBook and PC over sharing via 802.11b and down to my PC via wire. Which router would you get or have the best reputation? I like the NetGear because it has a 5dB antenna as opposed to anyone with a distance of 2 dB and the reception is important to me, but I do not want dropped connections per hour of course. Then again, the SMC is a lot cheaper than all others. What is your suggestion?
D-Link DI-614 + (http://www.dlink.com/products/digitalHome/wireless/11b+/di614+/) – $ 70 AR
NetGear MR814 (http://www.netgear.com/products/ prod_details.asp ? prodid view = u0026 = 151) – $ 65 AR @ CompUSA
SMC SMC7004VWBR Barricade (http://www.smc.com/index.cfm?sec=Productsu0026pg=Product-Detailsu0026prod=258u0026site=c) – $ 50 AR @ Outpost
Best Answer: Your only running at 54Mbps between your NIC card and the router. What is the bandwidth from the router to the Internet?

Re:It does not use straight MAC but rather IP addresses. However each Wireless address can be controlled whether its share the Internet or the LAN or Both or None. If you assign to your Wireless Cards a permanent IPs and restrict all others it will block any other uncalled Wireless Logging.

Re:The D-Link antennas are removeable also. Personally I'd go with the D-Link. I've been using the 614+ since August and have had nothing but great experiences with it.

Re:Just bought a Netgear MR814 after using a Netgear Rt314 wired router for years – flawless performance.
The MR814 feels cheaper (does not have nice solid steel case), but it set up in about 2 minutes. So far no problems at all. Nice Admin interface.
BTW – It is currently $70 at Amazon

Re:The SpeedStream 2624 is within my budget, I could get one of those although the NetGear has a 5db antenna as well…
I don't need good documentation, that's what you guys are for!
I do appreciate the assistance very much.

Re:Of your list, the SMC. Why? Their documentation is excellent, which is a help because tech support for any of these is, shall we say, not world-class? FWIW.

Why?
Unlike the others that you are considering. This one has a removable Antenna, and the default Antenna is 5.5dbi. the others it is only 2.2dbi.
