Q: I ordered some parts for a new PC.
I have a Cooler Master (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835103001) and I took it out of the box and have been sitting on a table for a while.
Unfortunately, someone who did some cleaning and put the exposed bottom of the cooler on a velcro, and scratched up the contact pad (http://images10.newegg.com/NeweggImage/productimage/35-103 -001-04.jpg) quite a bit. The trail is surprisingly sensitive.
I plan on more than observe, so Im going to spread some Artic Silver 5 on there. This will cover the deficiencies in the way that were caused by scratches. If a problem will cause the path it is possible to replace one another? If so, where can I
Re:I agree with noubourne. I'd return it and get the freezer 64 (http://www.provantage.com/arctic-acfzp64~7ARCT002.htm). For the price, you can't go wrong. The freezer has been giving the zalman cnps 9500 a run for it's money at half the price.
Oh yeah, that shouldn't be a problem at all. Especially if you're going to use thermal paste.
Re:Judging by the newegg reviews, at least one person has successfully used it with the thermal tape/pad removed and AS instead.
It looked to me like there was an indentation on the bottom which might have prevented you from using it without the pad. Apparently, that is not true, so as FMC said – just clean that gunk off and use AS5 instead.
I can't remember ever seeing that mentioned in cooler reviews though. It's always Zalman, Tuniq Tower, Scythe, and ThermalTake in the top 5 air coolers. It sorta blows my mind that someone even recommended it to you. There must be some alternate internet universe where coolermaster makes the best CPU coolers or something.
Re:If you messed up that thermal pad, it's fine, as you said you are going to use Aritc Silver 5 anyway. You don't want to use both–just one or the other. So get something to clean that stuff off properly (90% or better alchohol, etc), and it'll be fine.
Re:Return it. It's crap. Get an Arctic Freezer Pro 64 for $25 if you want the cheapest thing possible that still does a respectable job of cooling.
Re:I did plenty of research, and everytime i made a descision someone said something about this or that and I changed my mind. So i finally put it together and its too late now. So what do i do !
Re:You could have got a non-sucky Scythe Ninja or a TT Big Typhoon for about that price. That looks like utter crap to me. The Arctic Freezer 64 is cheaper and better too I think. You should have done some research. Nobody would have recommended that piece of garbage. The CPU contact area is made of frickin' aluminum FFS.
Is that thermal tape hunked on the bottom there? ack. I'd return it and order a different one.
