Why are thin and light notebooks anything but thin and light? [frequent business trips] [amp light]

Q: OK, heres the deal .

Ive is seeking a fairly comprehensive laptop to take on frequent business travelers. I usually do Office (Word / PowerPoint), email, web and a few misc things (light Photoshop when I need to edit photos for a PowerPoint, etc.), while on the road. Certainly not high-powered stuff 3GHz, but Im not in the mood to fight with either a Celeron. I also have a CDRW. DVD / CDRW combo drive would be nice to watch movies on the plane, etc.

Now, Ive looked at a large number of manufacturers of laptops, and Ive found a few things – either your laptop has what I want, but weighs 7 + pounds and is 1.5 cm or more thick, or thin / light, but has a micro keyboard, and uses external CD drives. Compaq has the guts to a 7.5 lbs, 1.4 “thick machine” thin and light. “

Basically what I want is a 15″ PowerBook G4 (1 “closed, only £ 5, full-size keyboard and a screen stellar conversation) that the Dell is XP.
Even just a few days ago released a 1.6GHz Pentium M Centrino laptop Latitude with a widescreen LCD screen, but its more than 7 pounds for crying out loud. The brand new Inspiron 600m (Centrino processor, 1.2 “thick, 5.2 pounds) is the closest Ive seen on an ideal machine, do not know where to see one in person. And Apple now has a 12 “sub-£ 5 PowerBook too.

Anyone us here not too concerned with price. Features / weight are much more important to frequent traveler.
I have even thought of buying a Mac to use the Heading for the reasons listed above. At least itll Office, Mozilla and DVDs .

Listen, Im not trying to make a Mac-PC flame war to start. What I want is a PC laptop with a PowerBook-size case. Anyone?

Re:I guess I posted too late… many of the Centrino laptops, such as the Sony Z1, is what I'm looking for.
Before the Centrinos, most were just too darn big.
Thanks for the many good suggestions.

Re:Check out the Sony VAIO Z1. Its 4.7lbs, and .9-1.5" thick. Im guessing it tapers off at the front. Seems very small from the pictures though

Plus it is a pentium M meaning its quite fast and the battery life is upwards of 6 hrs. Sort of expensive though.

Re:the lifebook series is really sweet.

Re:Obviously you didn't do enough research. Next time just ask for some opinions or where you can find thin and light laptops, not knock the few laptops you did look at.

Re:If price is not a concern as you mentioned, the IBM T40 seems tailor made for you… < 5lbs, 1 inch thick, 14 inch screen, combo drive, pentium-m

So, which one is it? It sounds like either a contradiction or an exaggeration. ;)

Is this Sotec (http://www.bestbuy.com/detail.asp?e=11202591&m=488&cat=494&scat=495) laptop too small?

Re:Why not get a powerbook? Word, powerpoint, photoshop, etc. are all cross platform and if you need a windows only app you can always run VPC on the powerbook.
