Why can not we write to CD / DVD-RWs as if they were floppies or hard drives? [linear array] [floppies]

Q: What stops us from formatting a CDRW with a filesystem other than iso? They are just a of bits. Why do we delete the whole thing and start over, rather than just to remove or modify specific files on them?

With flashdrives out now and so cheap, this feature is almost useless/obsolete.

Another weakness is that if you don't close the session no other cdrom drive will be able to read that open session.

A 4.7gb dvd costs about 50 cents and has higher transfer rates than a flash drives, so i dont' see how that feature is useless.

UDF (ISO 13346) is the successor to "ISO" (9660), particularly to support rewriteable and deployed widely since the mid-1990's in the sub-format MicroUDF bridge for DVD-ROM. See osta.org and ecma-international.org

Floppy-esque disc writing has been around since the early 2000's via the hardware-based MRW standard (Mount Rainier aka EasyWrite) and earlier by proprietary software only.

However, as the premium for DVD-RAM has more recently become negligible since its debut in the late 1990's, there is no reason for consumers not to use it exclusively. 12x is debuting now, with 16x forthcoming. See ramprg.org

You can, that's what UDF was designed for.

Though it would still be nice to have the drives be capable of doing on their own – you don't need special software to get a floppy drive to write to the disk.

I believe that you can with the right drivers, in Linux anyway, but from what I hear it's insanely slow since all of the work is done in the drive's firmware.
