Yep – they'd be better off contributing to or creating extensions for Firefox. Where they've been succesful so far is in niches where they could make revolutionary leaps over what existed. I don't think that opportunity exists in browsers right now.
Re:Maybe they have been busy and why divert resources to re-do what was done over a decade ago when there are more exciting and innovative paths to blaze, or at least things that can be more significantly improved?

Pretty much. Its not like they need to make their own. All they have to do is support Firefox. And they already have. They've included a google address bar and I'm pretty sure contribute plenty to Mozilla. That is their browser.
