Why has the Internet connection seems to be “dead” for the first 10 seconds of an XP startup? [xp bootup] [cable connection]

Q: I did not understand the internet seems to be dead for the first 10 seconds or so when my computer starts. I have a DHCP , and I run it through a router. It was like this before I had the router too. But, I remember he used to do this, and somehow stopped. I do not know why it all over again begun . but no help?

Re:I think if your computer has a static IP hard coded in (like when you set it up for ICS and it assigns the gateway computer 192.168.0.1) it access the network faster.

So you could always try and hard code it in.

If you have DSL/Cable and are using a router you will need to make sure your using the available addresses on your routed network.

Re:I am having the same problem. Before as soon as I logged into XP my inet connection was good to go. But my system got hosed and when i reinstalled now it takes like 10 seconds for aim, ie and other inet apps to work on the net. I get error messeges.. IT SO ANNOYING

oh well if you figure it out let me know

Re:I understand, but it's still strange. It wasn't always like this. If it was, then i'd be fine. It's like if you've had a taste of instantaneous speed, who wants to go back to delayed speed, right?

Re:There is a simple answer… It lies in the way Windows activates and logs onto networks.

Windows 95/98/98Se/Me activate and log into the network while loading (when that anoying "loading windows 98" screen is running), all prior to giving the user control to the OS.

Windows NT/2000/XP load the OS and give the user control prior to activating and logging into the network. Thus most NT/2000/XP machines can't find anything on the network if you instantly click on the network neighborhood upon gaining control of the mouse. Mine says the newtork is unavailable (because it literally hasn't tried to get into the network yet).

If yours only takes 10 seconds your doing well. The original article I read indicated that it could take upto 2 minuets in Windows 2000 for the network to be completely activated and logged into.

Re:How odd. Hmm, i do know that i haven't gone all-out with the tweaking like i did last time. Maybe it's time to start :P

Re:If you just can't connect for the first few seconds, it's probably because all of your services have not started.
