Q: I just do not understand why Apple OSX box and not sell them to anyone who wants to use. Now would be the perfect time for a full assault on Windows is started. I would install OSX on my PC in a New York minute!
So can someone explain why Apple does not want to compete with Microsoft? Would it not now the perfect time (before everyone upgrades to Vista?)

I wonder how good of an OS Microsoft could make if it only had to run on 5-6 configurations.
And got to completely shaft customers every few releases by throwing backwards compatibility out the window…
To answer your question though you can take a look at the HARQ/Datacenter version of Windows. Datacenter is shipped by OEMs who completely control the hardware, drivers and patches applied to the system. Net result? 99.999% (five nines) uptime EASILY.
Once you eliminate 3rd party craplications and drivers windows is nearly bulletproof.

Stand closer to the Steve. Ok now, repeat after me: They were never Apple Computer, they were never apple computer, they were never apple computer.
..:Q
This synergy is confirmed with Apple's CEO, Steve Jobs, announcing that the 'Computer' would be disappearing from the company's name. From now on analysts will have one less word to type, and Apple Computer, Inc, will from now on be Apple, Inc. This confirms Apple's committment to being something more than just a computer company.

Why do they care? Just put the OS out there and let the hardware manufactures make the drivers.
Let's try this again, #5,132: A significant amount of Windows instability (that isn't due to hardware) is caused by poor drivers. The same would be true of OSX, if they opened it up to multiple configurations that they don't dictate. Apple does not want the responsibility or expense of supporting such issues, nor do they want the reputation hit for being unstable.

Oh yes, please come into the market, apple. You can compete directly with Microsoft. Don't be scared. Mwahahaha.
Apple'd probably win in at least one market space: Most pirated OS evar.

Re:Wouldn't they make a LOT more money selling the OS to PC and Mac users? Microsoft hasn't had any problems selling Windows and making lots of MONEY.
Microsoft doesn't realy make any money from people that use home desktops and such. Sure they make quite a bit from OEM or retail licenses, people paying 100-300 dollars a pop, but not from people like Dell or HP who pay a tenth of that. They probably don't make anywere close to what you think they do, support costs for retail stuff is murder.
They make most their money from selling to businesses and such. Large scale licensing. That sort of thing isn't realy up Apple's alley and they would get murdered if they tried to compete head to head with Microsoft in that market.
Microsoft on the home desktop is used to keep people trained and familar for Microsoft in the business…
Apple makes most it's money from the hardware sales. They sell the same stuff that Dell does, but use OS X to make it more appealing and thus charge more money and have higher margins then what Dell can do. Also you've noticed that they've branched off into phones and mobile electronics.. or at least are trying to.
