Why – Win98SE out of the space environment? [out of environment space] [pc133 memory]

Q: Guys,

Im help to determine why I am an “” error on a Win98SE machine receives after installing third of the memory stick. Heres the details – Abit Bh6, 256MB PC100, 1.2GHz Power Leap CeleronII, Win98SE. I installed third stick of 128MB and the first start came fine.

Subsequent boots in a loop restart, and boot to DOS indicates that the “” error. I can not boot into Windows, even after removing the third pole, standard BIOS settings, reconfigure the BIOS for the CPU Bh6, etc.

What am I missing here? Your help / advice / suggestions will be greatly appreciated. This is my brother / sister in laws machine and I do not want to let them down. I have a Google search and came w / a suggestion to increase the shell environment. Is it as simple as that? I seem to another institution that but for the life of me I can remember is remembering fixes. HELP!

Best Answer: Every time your Java run time environment JRE is updated (some websites use it to show active content), the previous version is not uninstalled. It is in 99.9% of all cases safe to uninstall all outdated versions of the JRE (do not just delete the folder, use the Windows Add/Remove software feature in the Control Panel). If you know that you use an application that requires and only works with an older version of Java, do not uninstall that Java version.

The current latest version is Java 6 update 7.

You can check if you have the latest version here:

Re:guy, you've likely hit the nail on the head. Enough's messed up that a reinstall is probably in order.

Re:I'm in need of help to determine why I'm getting an "" error on a Win98SE machine, after installing a third stick of memory. Here's the details – Abit BH6, 256MB PC100, Powerleap 1.2GHz CeleronII, Win98SE. I installed a third stick of 128MB and first boot came up fine.Well let me give you a scenario:

First boot came up to Windows fine, but for whatever reason (defective or incompatible memory module), any number of files could have become corrupted: the registry, VMM32.VXD, several system or driver files, etc.

Try restoring a known 'good' backup copy of the registry, first. If that doesn't work, you may need to re-install Win98SE.

Re:Thanks guy, we'll give that a try.

Re:Try
FILES = 100
Type this line in your config.sys file that is in your root directory…

Edit: BTW, the reboot loop is usually a registry problem. Restore the registry from a back up if you can using scanreg /restore in the C:\WINDOWS directory. Use one from a date when you know the computer was working and try again…

Re:guy, it could very well be a hardware issue. It will boot fine to a DOS prompt, but Windows just puts it into a reboot cycle. I dunno, have to look into it further. Bottom line is it's time for brother in law to get a new machine!

Re::Q

I dunno, but this definitely sounds like a hardware issue to me.

Re:guy, that's the problem. When the system wouldn't boot w/ the third stick I simply took it out. Now I'm in this situation where Win98SE ends up in a reboot circle. If I try to boot into Safe Mode that doesn't work either – the system simply reboots and reboots and reboots. I can get to a command prompt and the line just before the C: prompt indicates the "out of enviroment space" error.

A couple of times, when the system would appear to boot to Windows I'd end up w/ a vxd blue screen. But, typically it just reboots until I shut it down.

Re:If it worked before the memory was inserted, could it be a problem with the memory stick?
