Q: I thought I was a wireless network here in the house. It works great, except for file sharing. My Win2k system is my desktop and it has a large part of all my data files. My laptop is XP SP2 and the computer I use most of the time because of convenience. If I start both computers at the same time, I can access the Win2k file share for about 4 minutes, and then not find the other computer. Also, neither computer ping the other computers IP address. By physically connected to a router with CAT 5 cable, my file shares work.
I have a D-Link DI-524 802.11g router, an 802.11g D-Link PCI card in Win2k desktop and a Microsoft MN-720 802.11 g PCMCIA card in my laptop. Ive downloaded the latest drivers for the cards and Im up to date Windows Update.
Any ideas? Ive been thinking for a few months of turning the Win2k XP machine . this will help some?
Re:Well, turns out that it was my Sygate firewall. I had it setup to allow LAN activity with my old LAN cards, but I totally forgot to also allow the WLAN cards when I installed them a month ago. I'm a moron! Thanks for the suggestions.
Re:I would try disabling any firewalls, I have seen NIS cause problems like that..
Re:Check out www.ezlan.net and follow the instructions there, very thorough and easy.
Re:Well, that didn't work either.. the problem is that 1 computer can't see that the other one even exists.. I never see the "name" of the other computer in network places/neighborhood.
Re:You probably never will because I sure dont! Find out the Ip address or computer name of your trying to connect to and…
In any folder type into the address bar:
\\Computername\C$
that will let you access the root of the c drive "$" means administrative access.. Thats how I access all drives on my computers. Be sure to have a password setup, you will see a dialogue and I usually have it

Re:I just diabled simple file sharing in XP Pro and setup identical users for each system and then added those users to the share permissions… still can't file share, or for that matter, I can't even see the other computer's name in Network Places. Any ideas?
