Q: I have a Netgear WGT624 “dual” router that keeps dying on me. I thought it was a heat problem, so I put a fan on it and now its cool. Even so, he still dies. It does not seem to be based on tax, because it remains intact during high network activity (albeit jerky). I hav WPA encryption enabled and I use 802.11a with B + G radios off. My friend who also experienced similar issues a Netgear router, and when he switched to his problems was a Dlink unit away.
Netgear used to good things, but apparently they do not. Any idea what if this random crap-outs that the router must be caused to be restarted (by power cycling).

Re:Yeah I was looking at that router. I think I will pick one up at BB and give it a try. I am sick of this netgear POS…

Re:I used to have this problem with my old SMC router whenever I had a lot of open connections (read: torrents) or just a lot of bandwidth going through the router. It would just overloaded and drop out the Wi-FI connection among other things. I recently purchased the DLink DGL-4300 and although it is kinda of pricey compared to the typical G router these days (read: crap routers), it hasn't dropped out what so ever in the months I've had it. This is with maybe 100s of open connections and a constant 600-1000kb/s download activity going through it. WiFI has never dropped and the router itself has never dropped. I don't use all the "gaming" features of the router, but it simply has high end hardware in there and a 200mhz chip to handle many connections so for me, it was well worth the extra money. It has gigabit lan to boot.

Re:Yeah the latest firmware was one of the first things I did and it didn't make any difference.
I'm thinking I'd be better off getting a nice commercial grade router and a standalone access point…but that's close to $1000 right there (for the good stuff).
