Will 802.11G for faster internet? [cheap laptop] [wireless router]

Q: I have a super g network setup at home and I recently just bought a for internet surfing. Since the Internet is through the wired / , speed will be faster on the Internet compared to the G b?

Best Answer: The difference is at the ISP it self. that's the most important thing.
Today Fastest Internet connection's ADSL and Fiber Optic. But Cable's enough.
Minimum Spec to gain fast internet access (just for browsing and viewing video) :

Intel P3-1gb
Memory SDRAM 256mb
any AGP card
HDD at 7200rpm.

If your computer better than those, than it'll be better, but not much effect. Because I already test RAM 512mb vs RAM 1gb for internet browsing is a same. nothing makes the difference. If you're doing multi tasking jobs, like browsing while editing photo under Adobe Photoshop, then 1gb give some effect.

Quad core vs Dual Core or 64 bit vs 32 bit are no much effect for the speed of internet connection, because the minimum for fast connection's P3, and P3's 32 bit. P4's more than enough. Even Celeron P4 generation can do it.

Video Card did not give any effect at all.
Minimum RAM's 256, but 512's better. If you like doing multitasking jobs, 1gb's enough.

OC / Over Clock give nothing at all, it just make your Processor / Memory Life time goes shorter.

OS didn't give much effect. Win XP's more than enough. but in WinXP Do not use IE. why ? because IE's Slow and unsecure ( http://www.stopie.com ), use Mozilla FireFox. It's fast and secure.

Stoping background process if your processor P4 and memory 512mb. That's no effect at all.

802.11g vs 802.11N router doesn't give significant effect.

To test the CPU speed use Sis of Sandra and many other program for benchmark. But for Internet connection download it and see the download transfer speed.

To boost your download progress use IDM – Internet Download Manager ( http://www.internetdownloadmanager.com ) This give a lot of support.

Best buy PC for today generation for optimal Fast internet and meet other needs, use my spec :

Intel P4 2.8 (Intel D820) Dual Core LGA
Motherboard Intel Original D102 GGC2L
(onboard Sound CARD, VGA-ATI RADEON X300, LAN 10/100T )
Memory 512mb DDR2
Hard Drive Seagate SATA 120gb

The Spec cost you only for about US$350

The answer above already tested by me(I test it at my own home, office, and my own Fast Internet Cafe), so fell free to contact me ^_^

but won't "g" allow for farther wireless? and don't most of the "g" units have better security? I know my "b" wifi router only has WEP.

Actually, 'b' usually has similar or longer range, although from what I've been reading, it may depend on the radio inside the unit, and given equal range, 'g' will give more usable bandwidth. Conversely, when enabling WPA on 'g' units, there have been reports of reduced range and throughput.

If you are just sharing a broadband internet connection, I don't see the need for 'g', although generally WPA is better than WEP, and most 'b' routers/NICs don't support WPA, so if you want WPA at all, you generally have to go with 'g' anyways.

However, if you want to use WDS, it doesn't support WPA at all, so you're back to square one. (WDS is only if you want to bridge wireless to wireless, using an AP as a wireless repeater, and also serve wireless clients at the same thing. Think 'mesh node'. Most routers/APs don't support that out of the box, and require 3rd-party modified firmware. So generally don't worry about that.)

Re:My WIRED computer is only as fast as my WIRELESS "b" laptop. I have a 1.5 connection. GP

So you guys are saying it will be faster on a LAN, but not a WAN?You finally Got It!

wan: no
lan: yes

Re:wireless g is just the speed you can transfer over the network (up to 54 Mb/sc) if you hook a wireless g router to your internet connection it wont speed up the internet, as you can only go as fast as your internet connection allows you to go

Re:I'm using Cox Cable and I think download is about 1.5mb. Just looked at Cox's site and it showed something about 4 and 5mb downloads…

Re:802.11g will yield better Internet in case that your Internet Bandwitdh is over 6-8Mb/sec.

Re:wan: no
lan: yes

Re:The bottle neck will still be your ISP, not the b or g wirless router.

Re:Can anyone confirm? That's what I would've thought, but someone told me that it would be faster because I was running the internet through the router to the network computers. And if it were just connected directly to a wireless modem, then it wouldn't matter. ???

Thanks
