will fdisk / reform. an influence on each partition on the same physical disk? [info thanks] [partitioned]

Q: I have a 20 gig into 2 disks. I need to format the HD (my main HD) and reinstall Windows, etc. How can I do this without the information on my other partition on that disk? I can not risk that info.

thanks

Re:Ahhhhh…wouldn't it be easier just to create a Win98 emergency boot disk???
That will automatically have format, fdisk, scandisk etc on it……..

Re:Very simple. :)

If you have Win 98 just format a floppy & select the "COPY SYSTEM FILES" option (makes it bootable). Then, copy FORMAT.COM from \Windows\Command directory onto the floppy (would also recommend copying at least FDISK.EXE, ATTRIB.EXE, EDIT.COM and SCANDISK.EXE onto the floppy.

Then – boot from floppy (make sure you've set that option in the BIOS that Floppy is first boot-device).

You will see this prompt:

Re:\>_ ==> _ == cursor.

Enter this:

format c:

Et voila – done. It'll format the HD & you're off to a clean start.

Hope this helps :) .

Re:So if i reboot to bootdisk, use DOS based reformat and reformat c:\ then i can install windows back onto it and it won't have touched my second partition on this drive right?

Re:Reformatting your C: partition won't affect the D: partition. You shouldn't need to fdisk. If you have any programs installed on D: which stuck dll's or anything into the C: partition you may need to reinstall them as well.
If you've got a CD burner or tape drive, it wouldn't hurt to make backups anyway. Make sure you've got a working boot disk before you proceed with anything.
