Q: Hey everybody,
Just Win98SE installed on a rig with a KDS VS-190 monitor, and MSI GF 2 MX.
Only thing is, for some reason Windows detects a “standard monitor” Everytime it boots up, and the drivers think 21, 83 I have a dual monitor setup . Anyone have any ideas?

Re:reread my post, i said to remove all monitors, the default one and any others that show up in safe mode.
once again, start at zero, reboot, let winblows redetect the monitor, at that time, don't let winblows update it, but direct it to update the drivers to the KDS ones, then you will only have one monitor.
you have to remove them all in safe mode, including the ones that refer to the KDS monitor too. gotta start from zero. I could tell you other ways, but it may confuse you.
it is a matter of proceedure, been there, done that, it really feels good when you stop banging yer head against the wall.

Re:Ok, here I am back at my main rig, ruinning win2k, and this GF2 MX is working fine. So what is it with 98SE that it has to be so damn stubborn?

Re:heh, neither am I, tried disabling the monitor in the hw profile, drivers still think I have 2 monitors. I swapped it out, may try it in my Win2k rig at home.

Re:you can disable 1 in the hardware profile so that atleast it wont give you a choice of 2 monitors to configure anymore but other than switching to older drivers that don't have that issue, I,m not sure how you would keep it from redetecting the monitor again

Re:<< boot to safe mode, remove both monitors, reboot, let it detect the 'default monitor' again, then update the driver as you just did right away, then you should only have the one.
you have to start at zero to get the one, been there, done that. just a matter of proceedure/sequence.
good luck.

Then I must be missing something somewhere. I remove in safe mode, reboot, update driver, then if I reboot, ta-da, another default monitor.

Re:<< Didn't have it with the older detonator drivers. Probably a driver thing. >>
Like I said, I switched to the Guillemot revisions of the 14.10 drivers (considering that I have a Guillemot GF2MX card) and that fixed it.

Re:This is no big deal. Card is perfectly fine. Just go and uncheck the box that says "automatically detect plug and play monitors" – see if that fixes the annoying driver prompt.
Re:reference driver don't help, I refuse to give up the XP drivers =)
Re:Are these the reference drivers you're using? I've experianced similar problems when I used the reference 12.41 drivers, though it only detected another monitor on the first boot-up. I'm using a Guillemot 3d Prophet II MX, once I tried using the Guillemot revisions of the drivers (v. 14.10) it worked fine.
I haven't tried the Detonator XP drivers, and I don't plan to (don't fix it if it ain't broke. Which it ain't).
Re:No, but its bugging me that it thinks I've got a dual head card or something like that. It shows 2 monitors in hardware, and when I go to adjust display settings, it lets me select between the 2 monitors. Never had this problem with my GF3, or in Win ME or Win2k…
Do you think this is driver related? Or is the card potentially FUBAR?
Re:Thats not a problem so long as it doesnt keep detecting default monitor on every bootup. Does it?
Re:Now it just thinks I have 2 KDS VS-190 Monitors.
Re:Go into device manager and double click on default monitor, clicke on the drivers tab, then click on update driver and install it for what it really is.
Re:Seems to me I had a similar problem. Try this: Boot into Safe Mode and remove the default monitor in Device Manager, then reboot. May or may not solve your problem, but it's worth a try.
