Q: I have win2k w / Epox motherboard 8KTA3 u0026amp, IBM 75GXP UDMA100 30GB hard drive.
Win2k under Device Manager, my hard drive appears as a SCSI hard disk. That is false and I have not found a way to fix it. I have the SP-1 package and tried the MS hotfix ATA100 and that didnt help. I have the Via 4 in 1 drivers installed. Does anyone know how to fix this?
My SiSoft Sandra benchmark Hard Drive pathetic, scored 1863 which was lower than the lowest on the chart to compare.
ANy help would be greatly appreciated, as this is annoying and the system leads to long delays in loading large files.

Re:guy,
Short of assuming you have the latest bios & drivers, I can not imagine why the delay.
I installed off the onboard controller last time and then switched to the Promise after installing the proper diver etc.
Have not tried the F6? on install method yet (probably won't either).
Just for snicks have you tried moving your Promise card to a different PCI slot?
Maybe Slickk can think of something else as he has a BX board.
good luck

Re:Thanks to everyone for the helpful words.
I am aware of setting the IDE channels to "none" where there are no drives. I have already done this but this is not the problem.
My problem is that the system pauses at the Win2k splash screen. During my last install, the pause was about 30 seconds but after a recient reinstall, the pause increased to 55 seconds. The only thing that I did different is that I loaded the Promise drivers when prompted during the install, "hit F? to load SCSI drivers…". The last time I loaded the OS I connected the HD to my normal IDE controller, loaded the OS, installed the Promise drivers and then moved the cable over to the faster controller.
I know the pause in the boot process is related to the detection of the controller because when I boot off of the normal BX IDE controller, their is no pause at all.
I have read in previous posts on this subject that their are known issues win2k and Promise cards. I was resigned to live with the 30 pause but this 55 second pause tells me that the OS is not configured properly. What to do?

Re:guy, for faster boots, go to device manager, and click on "IDE/ATA ATAPI CONTROLLERS" Now, click on the Primary IDE Channel. Click on the Advanced Settings Tab. If you don't have anything connected to the Master or Slave on the Primary IDE Channel (listed as Device 0 and Device 1), click on the down arrow next to where it says "Auto Detection" and choose "None".
Do this for the Secondary IDE Channel, too. What this will do is tell Win2K to skip over any IDE channels that don't have any devices connected, resulting in a faster boot as Win2K doesn't have to scan the channels for devices if not necessary.
Just remember, though, that if you ever want to connect something to those channels, you have to re-enable "Auto Detection" or Win2K will never see it.
Hard Money Course.
Re:guy
AFAIK Win 2 k will always see a HDD on the Promise card as a SCSI device.
I also have a BX board and once I flashed my Ultra 66 to newest bios and drivers, set my boot sequence to SCSI first and disabled all other onboard controllers in Bios, it boots quickly.

Re:Dude I dont know since you have a BXboard. you could try going to the Promise website or something and see if they have any new drivers for you.
The Via 4 in 1 driver version 4.29 is what did it for me, major improvement in performance. I wish You were able to use the same.

Re:I have the same problem with my 75GPX being recognized as a SCSI device in Win2k. The drive performance is OK but the boot time very slow because the OS is stalling out while it configures the drive – the system hangs a full 55 seconds at the splash screen. Does anyone know how to get the OS to recongize the drive as IDE. I have a BX motherboard and a Promise controller card.

Re:Whoah! what an improvement. I dont know if these are good scored, but they are like 1000 times better than what I got before intalling the 4.29 Via 4 in 1 Drivers.
Anywhere here they are, let me know if this is good for IBM 75GXP 30.7Gb w/ 8KTA3 (onboard ata100 controller)

Re:hard drives showing up as scsi devices in win2k is perfectly normal. it's DEFINITELY not the problem causing your apparent slowdowns.
Re:I don't have one myself, but I understand that Highpoint controllers (which are offered for your motherboard) show up as SCSI devices in Device Manager. I know my Promise Ultra-66 controller certainly does, so I would consider it normal unless you hear otherwise here.
As for the speed issue, that's another story.
