Q: A little experiment I did today supports my theory about the CPU, or perhaps another component cold startup and prevent WIN98 loaded. I know it sounds weird, but what am I suppose to think after doing the following:
I turned the computer off and left it off for about one hour. When I turned it on and closed WIN98 while loading just before his supposed to show / load the Windows desktop and items. So I went into safe mode and did absolutely nothing. The screensaver started and I left it running for a while (~ 15min) and then restart Windows. It loaded without problems. I am also with instability problems, but only at the start, never (!) Later on.
Any suggestions?

Re:Thanks a lot guys.
This morning was the first one that saw WIN98 loading normally. I opened the computer and checked all connections. I took out RAM and then put it back in(in the same Slot)and checked all other wires, slots etc. WIN loaded without a single problem.
circleck thanks you were the first to suggest this might be the problem and of course also to everybody else. You sure know your way around computers. I really appreciate all your help.

Re:Wow// some prob you have here, Try some or all of these things, not particularly in this order either: Pull the ram out, and reseat it in another dimm slot.#2: Disable SBLive Emulation in Device Manager. #3:Enable Delayed transaction in bios.#4: Try Enabling "Update ESCD" in bios Once. For a bit of Info: When you boot into Safemode, it fixes a certain vxd, 1 of which I can't think of at the moment, but it does fix 1, hence I would think this may be part of the prob, although I think the real prob is Ram related. Hope this helps.
Everything You Need to Know About Windows
Re:This sounds like something is not fully seated, when components get warm they expand slighty so will be making better contact, when cold the opposite, double check all your connections & components make sure they are all firmly seated.Otherwise I would suspect the PSU.
Update just read your last post, which makes it tough to nail the problem, try leaving your PC on for aweek see what exactly happens,at this point I would go through everything like CPU,Harddrive, etc.

Re:I would not be basing my findings on just one event. Its been happening for a few days now. Every day (at least 6 days) its been the same story. Works fine in the evening, locks up the next morning. Then I do all sorts of things (lately – last two days – I have had to go to a lot more trouble i.e. install new, old drivers, change BIOS settings, uninstall software,.. to get the computer to load, NOT install windows only to find computer not loading Windows the next Morning) until I get windows to Load. Here is the whole story:
I build my computer with the following configuration:
Abit KT7A Moterboard (VIA KT133a)
AMD Duron 800 CPU
CromeORB Cooler
Deskstar 75 GXP 45GB 7200 HDD
Macase 300W Power Suply
WIN98
128 MB PC133 Simple Technology RAM
TEAC 32x CD ROM
TEAC CD-RW 4×4x32
SB Live! 1024
Hercules 3D Prophet II MX 32MB (GeForce2MX)
U.S. Robotics 3 COM WIN Int Modem
I didn't buy all the components at once. I changed them one or two at a time, until
I ended up changing everything but CD-ROM drive and floppy drive. Everything was preety much OK
until I changed RAM from 192MB PC100 to 128MB PC133, which was the last thing that I changed
(apart from CD-RW). I left the computer without RAM for 3 days if that info is of any significance.
Then funny things started to happen. The computer would restart
or lock up while copying CD tracks from CD to HDD with adaptec disk doctor or CDex 1.30 beta8.
I also often got lock ups when installing Large software like games. Then it started to restart
during WIN Loading. I was also getting WINDOWS PROTECTION ERRORS. Changing BIOS settings to FAIL SAFE DEFAULTS
stoped that from happening for a while but soon that didn't help anymore. Then I found out I can stop PC from restarting
if I delete any one item from start up. BTW thats how I got it started today. But
as you can imagine, if I continued with that, I would sooner rather then later run out of things to delete so I decided to reinstall
everything from scratch. I had 3 partitions C: D: E: Now C: had windows and all other programs
D: had exclusively games and E: had all sorts of dokuments and small programs Zip files (CDex,
Winamp, Winzip, MBM5, …) and drivers. I didn't want to have to copy all that again to disk
from a large number of different CDs so I just formated c: and d: and reinstalled win98.
The first unusual thing was that setup prompted me with a question
!WARNING!
DISK BOOT sector is about to be modified
press y to accept all other keys cancel
I pressed y, but there is a cath here. Programs sometimes understand y as y, but if my regional
keyboard setting for some reason aren't recognised, it reads it as z. Anyway it promped me 3 times
so I got another chance and then I pressed z (potentialy y). I don't know what i pressed the third time.
or if there even was a third time. I'm really not sure. Perhaps I pressed y then y and then z.
I believe I did modify DISK BOOT sector eventually. I got this same prompt when I just reinstalled
windows a few days ago. It may also be significant that i had a complete crash, caused by FALCON 4.0 Game with
1.17 Patch on win ME . That time I just formated c: and left d: and e: untouched. I had a LOT of games
installed on d: and really didn't feel like doing it all again. The reason I'm telling you this is
because I'm worried that there might be some problem with e: since it hasnt been formated since
WIN ME. Could that be a problem?
I'm using VIA 4in1 4.28a and Detonator 6.50 Drivers, Fresh Install.
AND NOW THE STRANGEST THING:
Yesterday evening when I installed everything (fresh) it worked just fine. I even turned down The Computer for a while
pulled out the plug and turned it back on again and it loaded WIN98 just fine. Today in the morning WIN locked up during
loading(TWO TIMES). I removed Creative Launcher from start up and windows loaded without a hiccup i.e. without a problem. Now where
is the catch here. I am deeply puzzeled.
The upper is a little older (3-4 days) information but you might be intrested in it.
If you have any more questions I would be happy to answer?

Re:every computer component I have ever seen has operating specs that are at least 60F, so unless you're machine is droping below that, I would find something else to blame.
I also would not make a statement like that unless you had tested it on more than one machine. with all the hardware compatability issues out there, and as tempermental as windows is, I wouldn't base my findings on one event.
after you do this "warm up" period, are you completely (format and all) reinstalling windows, or just restarting?
try this:
attempt to install windows from cold, your theroy says it won't install. if it doesn't, then stop, use some utility to write the drive to zeros or anything else that has nothing to do with windows, but will "warm up" your computer. then, attempt to install windows from scratch, fdisk and all.
that might be a start for your theory.

Re:Badthat EXP. stands for experiment not expert. that would be myown thinking here. Thatnk for all the replys I'll check connections. I found it highlly unlikely that CPU could be too cold myself, but why the hell won't it load in the morning. Today I have done absolutely nothing but leave it in BIOS for a while and then it loaded fine (after freezing on first boot).

Re:LOL Actually I've heard of some people who can overclock their 500mhz Celerons to over 1ghz because they essentially almost freeze their chip. However, the other parts of the computer sooner or later stop working because it's so cold.

Re:Well, it could be running in absolute 0 (-273 C) …
I believe theoretically if that could be acheived, the system would not work at all because the electron flow necessary for conducting current would be in a state of suspended animation ….
but I'm guessing that isn't the case here….
Sorry…. I'll just go back out the way I came ..

Re:You need to find a new "expert", that's pure hogwash. CPU's run better when they are cold! The colder, the better.
Re:Make sure averything is plugged in tight, power cords to Mobo, cards, memory and everything else. Heat expands metal and would make a good contact when it might not be making a good contact cold on a loose connection…???…???
Re:Nop, CAN NOT be too cold.
Try something else.
Re:Well The PSU is supposed to be High Quality. Its a Macase 300W. I just changed it recently. Could it be faulty?
Re:I would first suspect the power supply.
Re:I had similar symptoms to this problem a while ago. This may not be your answer, but in my case the chip fan had fallen off and the chip overheated and burnt itself out. Performance was slow / random crashes.
