Q: Problem: Windows 2000 corrupted, everything seems ok but some applications will give fatal errors, such as the Control Panel applet to remove programs (C: Winnt System32 appwiz.cpl).
Im afraid of the operation of the CD option to the system to adopt, I have Service Pack 2 installed I have the option of fixing the Windows 2000 installation CD or is there a risk of deterioration in this thing?
Thanks Gustavo .-
Best Answer: As long as you have a legitimate key you can use someone else's Vista installation DVD to reinstall your copy. Just make sure you use the key supplied with your computer! Oh and make sure that the version you are trying to install is the same as the one on your pc! Keys for different versions will not work with eachother!
Re:What, specifically, are the other files that are corrupted? Why not run the chkdsk utility? Click Start/Run then enter in the box "chkdsk /f" without the quotation marks. You'll get a command window. It will tell you that it can't run chkdsk /f at the moment, but ask if you want to schedule it for the next boot.
Type "y" for yes. Then, reboot the pc. Chkdsk will run and attempt to fix errors. It will not replace files with older versions.
Re:Is not just a unique file that is corrupted, but dont know the reach of the corruption, several programs run ok, so I have the choice of uninstalling the service pack, then trying to fix the original windows 2000 and then reinstall the service pack.
But should I ?
Or just use the license until it expires and then reinstall everything from scratch ?
Re:If that one file is corrupted, you can simply extract another copy of it from either the CD, or better, from the service pack I386 folder. It might not even have to be "extracted"…you can simply copy it from the Service Pack's I386 folder to your \system32 folder. Then try to run it again.
I'm at work on a Windows 2000 SP2 pc, and it has the Service Pack folder as follows:
C:\Winnt\ServicePackFiles\I386 Look in the I386 folder (in the ServicePackFiles folder) and then you should see a copy of appwiz.cpl.
Re:It won't. You will have to re-install the service pack.
Re:Have you any estimation of success probabilities ?
How could the CD recognize that the Windows 2000 instalation is service packed ?
I mean, I have payed for a limited time licence of Genexus a program generator and I cannot afford to lose this license….
Thanks Gustavo.-
Re:Yes, boot from your cd and run the repair option.
