Q: When I use Windows Explorer to browse my hard drive, and I click on a file, say more than 50 MB, Windows Explorer will freeze and it will automatically reload Windows Explorer, as it will reload the system and stuff so, i ll lose some icons in the systray .
anyone any idea why win xp freezes when I click on a rather large file?
i tried formatting, and still does this .
thanks
Best Answer: A few things you can do/check, basically it probably due to a program that would start itself when boot causes the problem, and that program might also accept ctrl+c as command.
1. update your anti-virus software database, so a whole system scan
2. start, run, type msconfig , click ok button, startup tab, look thru the list see if you find any programs that you don't know, uncheck it, click ok button, restart pc
3. start, all programs, startup, if any program unrecognized, right click, choose properties, see target to get the path to the program, if not recognized, delete the shortcut from startup folder.
4. try to recall the time when system still running ok, go to start, all programs, accessories, system tools, system restore, rollback the system to prior the date.
Hope this helps.

Re:ok i just noticed that.. this only happens when i click on video files, no other files, only video ones… right now i know it's not my hard drive, cuz i've used 2 diff hard drives on this system, and it's not the OS, because i've reformatted numerous times… the hdd led light blinks when it reloads just like it's accessing the hdd.. do you think it might be sometime of problem with the ram then since its not the hdd?
thanks
How To Use Windows 7 Quick and Easy Guide
Re:After reloading the Start Menu/Taskbar/System Tray, did Windows XP display something like "Windows has just recovered from a serious problem… " and asked you to report the problem to Microsoft (You could disable this feature in Windows XP if you want) ? Does it freeze ONLY when you open a LARGE file? or it freeze and reload Start Menu/Taskbar/System Tray ONLY when you select SPECIFIC files of different sizes, large and small sizes. Does the HDD light on your computer case stay on when it freezes? It could be an issue with your built-in EIDE controller. Try to hook up the 2. drive TEMPORARILY to the secondary controller instead the primary and see whether it still happens. Note that usually, people would hook up CD-ROM and DVD-Drive only to the secondary controller and all HDDs will go to the primary controller, but just do this for testing.

Re:ah sorry forgot..
amd tbird 1.4 ghz, 512 mb ddr ram, geforce 2 ultra, maxtor 60 gig, WD 160 gig, Windows XP
this is really weird…first i thought it was windows that made it freeze, so i formatted and reinstalled windows, and then it still did.. so then i thought it was something wrong with the hard drive, so i bought a new hard drive (needed new one anyways), and it still does it on the new hard drive..
i now have no idea what could be causing this… i'll go to my computer, and browse my folders, and then either if i click once on a 15mb+ file to see its details, or if i double click it to open it (say its a video), it'd open the video and play.. but then windows explorer will still freeze, so then i guess it closes explorer.exe and reloads it so it reloads my start menu/taskbar/system tray
