Windows ME strikes back from the grave — [spare cards] [malware]

Q: Ok, so I was asked by the family for a peek into their computers to take over and see if I can clear out spyware, , or maybe upgrade a few items of I have laying around. No problem there. I was able to increase the RAM and the old GF 2 MX 32MB to a slightly more current GF 2 Ti200 64MB upgrade. I obviously unistalled the card and drivers older than replace the hardware and install the newer drivers from the Nvidia site. This system runs the notorious Windows ME. After installing the drivers the system will not boot into Windows.

Upon boot the OS blue screens with a run-time error 91.

Object variable or block variable not set.
Error 0E: 0028: C0030D12

Clearly video driver or something in the OS are not after installation. When I boot into safe mode and try to display the current drivers I get an error to remove

r
Nvudisp has caused an error in NVUDISP.EXE Nvudisp will now close.

Now 2000 and XP, I can easily return to the last good configuration, but Im not sure how this new driver to remove and recover the system runs as it was. Even after reading some of it may be that I need a series of updates to this copy of Windows ME to run can run in harmony with the updated NVIDIA display driver.

Is there a way to restore the system to previous settings? It does not matter if I update a system to perform whilst in safe mode. Thanks for any help!

Re:- TA00407 -

Fatal exception 0E has occurred at 0028:C02A27A8 in VXD VWIN32(05) + 000012D0/+000012D, win98

Solutions:

1. One user has reported it was caused by a bad system FAN causing overheating
2. Another user has reported that this error message was caused by the Backdoor.NTHack virus which installed winproxy 3.0 (mmtask.exe) and tried to steal passwords
3. 0028:C02A27A8 VXD VWIN32(05) +000012D due to conflicts with Pest Patrol
4. Another user has reported that it was caused by Norton AntiVirus 2001 automatic update running at startup (ntdetect in scheduled tasks). He disabled the task in safe mode, and it booted fine without the error. After manually running Live Update, he re-enabled the task and the Computer worked fine
5. Another user has reported issues with the Borland Delphi software due to possible problems with the way vwin32 implements several dos-compatible system calls for device I/O ( in the shared function libraries).
6. It might be caused by the DMIStart utility
Use the MSCONFIG utility, go to the startup tab, and see if the DMStart utility is there, if it is, uncheck it, close Msconfig and reboot.

1) Run CCleaner (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4191)
2) Run Driver Cleaner 1.5 (http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/Other-DRIVERS-TOOLS/Others/Driver-Cleaner-Professional-15.shtml) and choose NVIDIA
3) Download and install the 66.42 drivers (http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=906)

He cannot even get it to boot, so how is he going to run driver cleaner? His best bet is to download the Ultimate Boot CD (and use the offline registry/system editor) or get a Linux Live Disk like Ubuntu or Knoppix and manually delete the offending files.

Second he should revert his graphics card and ram back to the way it was before he made any changes. After he does that, then report back to us for further instructions.

Re:WTF, i want my 2 minutes back

ME? Is that person nuts for using that POS? LOL :)

Re:You can FORCE WinME to use the standard VGA Display Drivers so you can then properly clean-out the NVidia drivers and reinstall the correct version of Forceware… remember, the more current Forceware drivers don't support all GeForce cards… as previously recomended, the 6-series Forceware drivers are probably what you'll want to run on a WinMe system.

Re:what did you increase the ram to?

Re:Is there a tool with Nvidia to remove drivers ?
Other than that, get the drivers INF file, restore the registry, boot with a boot disk or CD and manually remove the files listed in the INF file.

Re:Ha…this is funny. Since I've never owned Windows ME I was not even aware the MS had implemented system restore in this OS. Clearly I did not do enough Googling early on. That said, it is also humorous but expected that the last restore point was May 24th…2006! I tried using that point as it was the most recent but restore failed. Interestingly enough it left the system in a state where I could perform a MS update and lastest service packs. I'm in the process of doing that now. My hope is that with the system updated, the display drivers will work, or can be uninstalled and reinstalled.

Re:Boot off a W98 floppy and try scanreg/ restore at the prompt. It should boot up ok with the new vid card seeing as they are both NVidia cards.

Re::Q

Try a System Restore from Safe Mode, or go to Device Manager and see if you can uninstall that driver or switch to a generic VGA driver. Any good?
