Q: Ive run XP for a few months and now wants to start messenger pop. I have never used and dont want. Before he always had the X over it, but now appears when I go online. Any suggestions?: Confused:
Best Answer: If you are using a dialup connection make sure you don't have call waiting enabled by using *70 before dialing your number. You may also have a problem with your phone line and may need to have the phone company test it. You may also have a faulty modem within your computer. You can get a new one for as little as $15 so if you can install it yourself it may be worth testing.
If you have DSL or Cable check your IP address and its lease time while you are connected and after you get disconnected. Click on Start, then Run and type cmd and click Ok. Then type ipconfig /all and see what your IP address, DNS server and lease time is. Compare the before and after results.
If you are using a router with your DSL/Cable modem try to bypass it and plug directly into the modem and reboot to see if the router is dropping the connection. If you still lose the connection reboot the modem rather than the computer to see if you get back online. If so then it’s most likely a problem with your DSL/Cable modem.

I always delete the messenger folder to prevent it from getting started again. Something could always restart the service. Its a real pain in the *** to get rid of.
You mean such as an applictation that actually makes use of it?
Having the messenger service enabled shouldnt be an issue, if you are recieving popup messages it is really just an symptom of a larger problem. If you run a firewall it wont matter if the service is enabled or not.
I'll make it really easy for you, here is a direct link to the download site of the free version of Zone Alarm. (http://download.zonelabs.com/bin/free/1001_cnet_zdnet/zaSetup_37_202.exe)

And people wonder why Comcast is getting ready to shut down all of their users who have computers which have been infected with Blaster…
Wasn't actually Comcast, but Roadrunner.
And yes, they will likely be shutting down infected users' accounts.
I spent all day Saturday & half the day today calling people to get them to clean their systems. 3000+ people were on the list, & every one of them could have been avoided with proper AV software, firewalls, and windows updates.
The majority of the people I talked to (I made ~300 calls) had NO clue what windows update was, I had to spell it out for them step by step.
There is absolutely no excuse for unprotected systems, & they deserve to have their accounts shut off. With the explosion of the internet you are no longer a danger to only yourself.

Re:I would suggest Zonealarm as a firewall, because it pops up a window asking if you want to let a program access the internet, which would eliminate setting IP's etc, as whatever game/searching program would have access.

Re:I dont think it is neccessary to install a firewall and run virus scanner all the time.
I mean you have to despite the fact that there are a lot of "slow performace" computers (Pentinum <= 2) still running. And most of the guys would like to reinstall the whole system every threee to four month.
Enabling firewall and virus scanner would just be annoying for those gamers and those low-usage user since they will keep posting "how to set this ip" and "how to open that port" on the forum.
I dont think it is convenience to install firewall and virus scanner if security is not ur concern

A firewall will block the messages as well.
Please use a firewall and dont just disable the messenger service, if the messenger service gets these messages it means that your box is directly accessable to the internet (a "bad" thing).
Anyone who is connected to the internet should be running both a firewall and a virus scanner at all times, they should also keep their OS updated to ensure issues such as the Windows RPC/IIS/etc. exploits are kept to a minimum.

No, he's talking about windows messenger (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/using/howto/communicate/default.asp)
Re:are you talking about msn messenger?
Re:Thanks, did it , now I will see if that does it.
Thanks again
Re:Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services. Find Messenger, double click, stop it then set it to disabled.
A firewall will block the messages as well.
