Windows startup, starting from station . Update: Port Driver failure [vfat error] [sys c]

Q: Alright for a long story short, I worked on this computer for the last few hours to make. Before I could not get into Windows at all (non-OS said initially did : and got a prompt with a boot disk . then when I tried just starting windows with a win you a ID ), I also found that now.

I can get into Windows by typing win at the DOS prompt. But because I ran : it only comes to a prompt every time. I have to manually start windows, how do I automatically start Windows again?

thanks . more questions that still weird probs in installing it . Follow

UPDATE: Windows boots, but still a bluescreen,,, read a few posts down .

I this message on every attempt startup.

u0026quot; Windows
This request to the Port Driver associated with using COM Port 3 failed because the driver is busy or does not exist u0026quot;

I tried to remove then re-add all the serial ports several times, no happiness. There are only two serial ports, so I am assuming since Windows is trying to one third (COM is a serial only, right?) Works just using inst .
any ideas?

Re:I'll check that out when I get back over there tonight. I don't think there is, I know there is a 'cabs' dir where windows copied the files over from the cd, but i dont know how much farther they got. they thought it would just reinstall windows and all their programs would still work fine (w/o reinstalling and such) so when they perhaps sensed otherwise during the reinstall they got cold feet,,, or so i assume.

anyway to reinstall all system files, like win2k has? however sfc finds no probs in the system files.

only thing i see as a major problem now is the blue screen on startup(which can be bypassed) that says something about the "portdriver" on com3,, blah blah blah.. how can i search for what program is trying to use that com port and change it,,, problem is there is no com3, or i dont think there is… thats why its not able to use it.

Re:Does this thing now have more than one Windows directory? Take a look and see if you have a \Windows and a \Windows001 directory or something like that.

Re:not sure what had happened. my girlfriend is 'pet sitting' for these people,, they asked her if she knew anyone 'good with pcs'.

so i havent even talked to them. they just said for me to look at it. it wouldnt boot to C, then it wouldnt start windows,,, blue screen after blue screen i have worked thru to get into windows in normal mode.

to try to fix the orginal problem they had started a windows98 reinstall then stopped half way thru, that has caused some probs,,, what happened before that i dont know…

they have around 20 things running in the systray right now, very very annoying.
