Q: Do I need a mobo problem?
XP boots from the CD, setup begins, it starts loading and then stops on all things “settup Windows starts”. That is the furthest it has gotton.
On The subsequent attempts do not get that far and stops much earlier, while loading some drivers.
I thought I might be a USB problem, so I switched my USB mouse to a standard mouse. Now its not even start the Windows setup. It closes down on “verifying DMI pool
Everything is new . KVR400/512r Kingston mem, 160 WD.
I cleared CMOS and loaded the default CMOS settings.
Im will change the mem . other ideas?
Thanks, Dan
update:
I do not think my CPU is sitting upright. Do not feel when I fight in. . This is my first 64.
I noticed some really high temps when I CMOS . I could see it quickly up into the 80s. I think it ends when it gets to a certain temp.
Re:I stayed up till about 4 in the morning working on this and tracking down tidbits of info on forums. I finally figured it out though. Here's what I did. I disabled all devices on the mobo except for critical stuff like my hard drives. So USB, ethernet, sound, unused disk controllers went out the door. Then I went in and disabled the ACPI and that 1.4 version stuff in advanced settings in BIOS. It seems windows was having a problem trying to load either the HAL or the ACPI stuff which made since seeing as my hardward is probably newer than the info on the windows install disk. I was then able to get windows to install, but I also had to opt for the Silicon RAID vs, the nVidia RAID due to drivers on the F6 disk not working right. Once windows went on, I was able to switch back on the bells and whistles and am happy to say I'm typing this reply on the aforementioned system right now.
Re:How many minutes does it say is remaining just before it shuts down? The time left is usually an indication of the problem. For example, if setup hangs or restarts at the 34 min mark, then there is a hardware issue.
Re:I'm having the same problem with my new computer. I'm in the blue screen phase of the install while it loads the generic drivers into memory and once it gets to the part where "Setup is starting Windows" it stops. I've left it running for 5 minutes and it's still stuck there. I tried taking all the memory out, but 1 stick. I tried different memory. I even tried a different windows CD. I tried with RAID on and without RAID. I did notice that my Coursair 4400C25 wasn't working at the right speed or voltage so I bumped the voltage up to 2.75 and but didn't mess with the timings. I even tried bumping my memory up to 2.95V and still nothing. I double checked my CPU temps and they're hovering around 47 Celcius in BIOS which I think is more or less normal for the FX-55. Anyways, I'm stuck and would really like to get this rig up and running. Any advice would be appreciated.
Here's a list of what's inside:
AMD FX-55
DFI Lanparty NF4 SLI-DR
2X 512MB of Coursair 4400C25
2X eVGA 6800 Ultras (properly set up for SLI)
2X 74Gb Raptors
Soundblaster Audigy 2ZS
Enermax Noisetaker 600 Watt SLI power supply
Re:Yep, the heatsink was not seated right. The thermal stuff was not flattened out completely across the CPU.
I cleaned off the surfaces with goof off and used Arctic Silver.
When I booted up I quickly went into CMOS to watch the CPU temp….started at 31 and rose to 37. I set the shut down temp at 60.
Windows XP loading now.
I have a new Sonata case….super quiet and very sexy looking black.

Re:Ummmm yeah, that's WAY high for an Athlon 64. My Athlon64 2800+ with stock heatsink/fan runs at 30 celcius while idling in the bios!
You may want to take that heatsink off and remount it properly.
