Windows XP – users switch. a problem on both my machines. [switch users] [desktop machine]

Q: On my , while users (or logging in after screensaver) sometimes my sound gets all muffled and cracking so I mute the volume until I reboot. It is also common for the Internet fall and the shell (Explorer) to reload and not at all a reboot.

On my laptop computer requires, its a bit annoying. When switching users (or to log in again after a screensaver) most of the time, I get an error saying “can not at this time. If this problem persists, restart the computer.” Now , which is annoying. if it is able to log in, my work 802.11b card drivers crash the machine and do not realize that the weather there who need a restart.

I 2 accounts, myself (admin) and my brother. Both computers are up to date with windowsupdate.com. All devices have up-to-date drivers. If more info is someone who can help me, please ask.

Best Answer: To recreate a profile in XP (and in W7) is a relatively straightforward process. Within the user's profile copy Desktop, Favorites, My Documents, My Music, etc. to C:\Temp. Once all of the pertinent data has been backed up (don't forget Outlook .pst files and Mozilla profiles) simply delete the user from Documents and Settings… or, in W7 it will be the user name within C:\Users.

After a reboot the user logs in and his (her) profile will be recreated.

To be honest, your description sounds a lot like the server was recently patched and one of the patches is blocking these requests for access, though.

Re:The laptop is a clean install of WinXP actually. I would've guessed it was a driver problem on my , because 1 or 2 pieces of hardware is old. But the laptop, it's brand new. I doubt it's any drivers.

Re:Hmm that is strange that you are having logging problems on both machines. Perhaps it is a piece of software that you have installed on both that is causing the problem. I doubt its hardware specific as both machines would be radically different.

Re:Logging off isn't an option, because that kills all programs that need to be open. Rolling back drivers isn't an option, cause I'm too lazy and that takes so much time to find what's causing it. I'll keep reading, and see what happens.

Re:I'm not sure what the problem is, but you might find it works better when using Log Off instead of Switch, I've seen that cause some problems before.
Having said that, at work we had an urgent bulletin passed round saying that T****** laptops had a fault with the graphics driver that when Switch was used, the colour depth dropped to 8-bit max and 640×480.

Based on that, try rolling back some of your drivers. Failing that, the Microsoft Knowledge Base is wonderful for this kind of thing (Linky (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;[ln];kbhowto))

Let us know how it goes!
