WinXP ICS client can ping websites (both URL and IP), but can not connect through IE. Please help! [lan settings] [proxies]

Q: Hi,

Im some trouble configuring ICS on two WinXP computers.

The network connection between the two is good – I can ping back and forth between the host and client. The Web client can ping both by IP and URL. But IE will not connect to the client sites. I have it set to automatically detect settings under in IE. Specified.

Any no are thoughts? Thanks!

How to Set and Achieve a Goal
Re:If you are using DHCP you do not need to change any of the IP settings on the clients that is what DHCP is for. Now, if you are using static IP address, you need to specify the Gateway and DNS addresses. Also, like the others have said, uncheck anything under the for IE. That should things working for you. Also, since you said that you can ping websites by their DNS names and IP addresses, your DNS addresses are correct as well as your gateway. Basically all of your IP settings should be correct right now. I would just uncheck Automatically Detect Settings.

Re:Your server box should have two NICs, one connected to the Internet, and one connected to the LAN. The card connected to the LAN should have a static IP address of 192.168.0.1. Setup the client machine to obtain the IP address automatically and as Woody said, remove any proxy configurations on the client machine.

If you want to setup the client with a static IP address, you don't need to include the DNS server address, just leave it blank.

Re:Well, with WinXP, if you set a gateway, you also have to set a static IP and a DNS server. Should I also do this on the client, and if so, what would I set the DNS server to?

Thanks for the replies…

Re:WinXP ICS is completely transparent to the client.
Get rid of the "detect settings automatically" option.

I take it the client is obtaining an IP address from the ICS server? If so, you shouldnt need any clever configuration, and the gateway should automatically be set to the address of the ICS server (192.168.0.1 by default.)

Don't even touch the proxy settings – WinXP ICS doesnt use a proxy server, so telling it that one exists will definitely stop it working.
