Wireless network for a business? [setup a network] [11g wireless]

Q: Hey Guys, Im about 977 503 to set up a network for a small company with about 5 computers on the network. I considered the use of an 802. network to allow for a mobile environment. How is the security on these things? Am I asking for trouble when I setup the network in this way? I have a “G” network in my house and I love it, but Im not sure if its good enough for a company. The way the company runs will not demand a large amount of bandwidth, so the 20-30mbpss that runs on the network will be fine. Or should I just a good ole wired network set-up? Thanks for the help!

Best Answer: The easiest to do is to use a second router. Not the easiest thing to setup unless you follow a few critical issues but still the best solution.
With the 2wire it does allow a second router to be setup. The second router needs to be in the DMZ+ (which they have easy to setup)

Since the 2wire is on 192.168.1.x be sure to set the SECOND router to another network like 192.168.10.x so that it doesn't conflict. Then it will have an IP on the 2Wire and issue IP's on a different network.

Once the new router is setup (should have a STATIC IP set on the 2wire LAN like 192.168.1.10) Put the second routers IP in the DMZ on the 2wire. Thats is all that has to happen.

For 2wire support (and they do discuss a router behind a router) go to http://2wire.com

You can also get routers that use a username and log on which gives you some control. A good one for hot spots is the AirEpoch unit.

It has user management built in, can even be connected to a ticket printer if you want to SELL time. Has the ability to isolate all wireless users from the wired lan!

Unless you have a specific need for wireless that can't be met with wire, copper all the way for business. I allowed for that here, but many people will install something just becasue it sounds cool, when they really won't wander around in practice. I have bought a lot of cool stuff, only to realize I did not need or use it as intended:P

here here! :D
I have a TON of stuff that is "cool" that I should have never bought…hehehehe

Wireless is fine, if you want a mobile office, then why not use it? The bad part is you need to buy some SERIOUS hardware, not any off the shelf Dlink crap.
Don;t be fooled thinking it isnt a solution, wired is the obvious way to go, but for those who will actually use it, wireless is a great tol.

Figure this:

A couple of Cisco 802.11b AP's (can go to G later witha mini PCI card) – Cost: $1200
A Nortel VPN server that allows up the needed connections – Cost: $1000 – (This would be for a Contivity 600 or a Contivity 1100)

Now compare the cost of setting up a wired lan:

Nortel 450BT managed switch – $600 on ebay (they never die)
Wiring costs: $400 (might be over shoointg here if you do it yourself)

Obviously the speed and cost of a wired LAN make it the obvious choice. But if you really want people to be able to just move around at will without the LAN cable, then wireless is the way to go.

1.) Copper is 100% reliable if installed correctly.
2.) It cannot be interfered with, and the medium offers no security risk whatsoever.

Re:On a business that needs the security, I would go with a tried and true way of a wired network. Wireless hasn't won me over yet. Thats just my opinion though.
