Wireless Network Questions: Will this router work? [linksys wireless router] [setup a network]

Q: I live in the sticks, so DSL or cable are not available. Our friend who lives next door get Direcway 2-way satellite installed next week. We plan to using this (http://www.apet.net/satnetwork) configuration procedure given here.

Question However, we must set up wireless. I have looked at the (http://www.linksys.com/Products/product.asp?grid=23u0026prid=173). Will it work for us?

Im guess I will either have this wireless USB network adapter (http://www.buy.com/retail/computers/product.asp?loc=10101u0026sku=10273696) or wireless LAN PCI card. (Http: / / www.buy.com/retail/computers/product.asp?loc=10101u0026sku=10273696), no? What do you recommend, the PCI or USB? Here are my specs

Last:

Our houses are 150 meters away from each other with a clear vision of each others computer office. Unless some other form of electrical interference or the weather, this router and wireless cards should work, right?

Im very experienced in networking, but I never did what you wireless see.

Thank you!

Jason

Best Answer: Read the specifications of your wireless router or access point to see if it's compatible with G & N. I believe most of them are.

For example, the Standards specifications for the TRENDnet TEW-633GR list the following:
———-
Wireless: IEEE 802.11b, IEEE 802.11g, IEEE 802.11n (draft 2.0), IEEE 802.11e QoS
———-

This product is compatible with wireless standards 802.11b, 802.11g, and 802.11n. This is an example of a product that will do what you want. Find a product with the same specs and you'll be in business.

BTW, thanks for the Dixiesys tip.Well…whaddya know!
Didn't realize that Dixiesys was located here in AL.

Altho I should have known from the company name, eh? :D

Re:Jack is right…you only want 1 device doing the routing.

The Orinoco RG series can be set up in several "modes"
If you go with an RG-1×00, and decide to use the Java installer, you'll want to choose "Infrastructure" mode.

If you go with an RG-1×00 series, and you decide to "upgrade" it to an AP-500, then the device will no longer support routing functions…but will support nifty stuff like RADIUS authentication (and a host of other enterprise-level features).

Re:You got both issues right.

In case of a Laptop get Wireless PCMCIA, USB will work, but it is not comfortable to carry.

BTW, thanks for the Dixiesys tip.

I have few accounts with Gary, but I need more.

Re:So, just so i understand:

-No wireless router needed, as the PC that is connected to the satellite is already doing this through ICS or some other means.

-The WAP is simply a means for other PC's to connect to the host computer. Each PC needs its own USB Wireless Client Card, which connect via wireless transmission to the RG-1100 Broadband Gateway, which is connected to the host PC.

Thanks for your help…Damn, i hate living in the sticks – It'd be much easier with a router connected to a DSL or Cable line.

Re:The content of the following links is a primer for Internet sharing, and Wireless.

However, Satellite Internet connection works differently from DSL or Cable, thus the info in the links is not a direct solution to your setting, use it for general orientation.

AnandTech – FAQ . Basic Options for Internet Connection Sharing (http://www.{$MySite}/guides/viewfaq.html?i=105)

AanadTech – FAQ. Hubs, routers, switches, DSL, LANs, WANs…? (http://www.{$MySite}/guides/viewfaq.html?i=48)

AnandTech – FAQ. What do I need for wireless networking? (http://www.{$MySite}/guides/viewfaq.html?i=122)

The way it is described on the link that you provided. The sharing is done by using the method of two NICs; (in your case USB from the Satellite, and additional NIC in the host computer) connection goes to the host computer that is probably acting as a Software NAT Router. This computer has to be on all the time, for you to get connected.

The transfer from the host to the rest of the network is a regular Ethernet transfer through CAT5 or Wireless Access Point.

That means NO Router for you, do not buy a Wireless Cable/DSL Router. You need an Access point connected to the Host Computer, or to port on a switch that is connected to the Host. For your Desktop use a USB Wireless Client Card.

Using regular Entry Level hardware to cover a distance of 150? is questionable.

I would buy the top of the Entry Level Access Point / Client Card.
