Q: I have an Actiontec DSL gateway (modem) and a Dlink DI-624 router (router) 0.
I have a strange situation where I connect the router to the modem and the Ethernet light on the modem will periodically flash. I can connect to the network, not the internet.
Then I put a computer on both the modem and Ethernet lights on the modem will come on and flash in unison. I can now connect wirelessly to the computer internet.
When I then disconnect the Ethernet connection to the router will sometimes return to periodically flashing and remain solid at times. If it continues, I can consistently connect to the Internet, otherwise I would cannot.
Eventually modem, the router will drop again and I will return a computer in.
Sadly I can not plug a computer connected to the modem or I should have . right?
Is this a problem with the modem, router, me or the software / firmware?
Thanks your help.

So you're saying grab the IP that my laptop ethernet card is on and force the 624 to that?
Isnt it assigned dynamically by the modem/router?

EDIT> Tried setting the IP to a similar address, no go, didnt help anything sadly.
I'm also having troubles getting to the actiontec setup utility on the modem because the IP address used to be the same as the 624 but got taken by it, now I'm not sure how to access it.
IP address was the same for both units??? Both the Modem and 624 have resets, usualy by a sall hole and you use a paper clip to push it in for about 5 seconds and everything goes back to defaults.

Re:No,,
Log into the router , advanced and performance , set preamble to Long
Home and wireless, channel 11.
and make sure ur wirless laptop has no Firewalls, and no STATIC ip on it.
if wired works the router connecting is fine dont need to change the ip of the router.

Re:The 624 is most likely trying to run on a different subnet than the Actiontec.
When it is working catch what IP address you are getting by doing IPCONFIG /all
Then go into the LAN setting of your 624 and set an IP address close to what you just got when connected.
That should settle your mystery.

Re:I'm actually on a static IP from my ISP…and it doesnt matter what computer I connect to the modem as long as there is a computer connected. It seems as tho when I disconnect the router from the modem and only have the computer connected the same thing happens…I seem to have to have both connected.
That is strange because this modem is over 2 years old and has been running with only a computer connected to it for about 6 months now.
Thanks for the link BTW
Any more thoughts?

Re:Are you keeping the DSL PPPOE alive via the Router?
It might be that you are still using the PPPOE software that is installed on the Wired computer.
